We often disagreed but privately Ann Widdecombe never confused status with worth. She treated everyone with the same dignity whether they could do anything for her or not. That was her idea of justice. After such a terrible death, she is owed no less.

That’s why I have appointed @JacobFreeeman as an expert adviser on youth justice here at the @MoJGovUK 👇 Jacob’s story of restorative justice is shown across the country in “Punch” - a play by @mrJamesGraham about Jacob’s childhood, his crime, and the journey he, and his victim’s family took. From the West End to Broadway, Jacob’s experience It is about poverty, rehabilitation, crime, masculinity, and, ultimately, redemption - and the opportunity to turn around lives, and contribute to society. Policy from Whitehall must be informed by lived experience. So pleased Jacob is on board, ready to help us transform the youth justice system.

Calls have been growing to reconsider scrapping jury trials. Several stories in the papers this weekend pointed out some of the issues with eroding this deeply entrenched constitutional principle. One of Chair Kirsty Brimelow KC's priorities this year is the criminal justice system crisis, leading our #JusticeNeedsJuries campaign against the government proposals to reduce jury trials.

The violent attacks in Edinburgh on Friday, in which five men were injured and worshippers were assaulted as they left a mosque, are a horrifying act of anti-Muslim hatred on British soil. I send best wishes to those who were hurt, to their families, and to Muslim communities across Scotland and the wider United Kingdom, for whom these days will have been filled with fear and grief.
