Under the government's proposals, not one of the 900 wrongly convicted subpostmasters would have had a right to trial by jury. The Prime Minister himself concluded in a report that the scrapping of jury trials led to miscarriages of justice in Northern Ireland in the 1990s. The right to trial by jury must be protected. #JusticeNeedsJuries

“While addressing racial bias is a necessity, the government’s proposal to reduce jury trials is not the answer.” Balit Banga, CEO, Hibiscus, one of over 30 signatories. You can read her and other signatories comments below in the links. Some of that comment is here “To make meaningful progress, we must take an approach that fully considers the realities of women’s lives. Only by engaging with their lived experiences can we challenge the assumption that our system is impartial. When women at the margins face discrimination, it undermines justice for everyone. Access to justice cannot be reduced to a single issue. It is deeply interconnected with violence, discrimination, and inequality. Hibiscus is committed to championing reforms that improve access to justice for all women. We firmly believe that retaining jury trials as a cornerstone of our justice system is essential. While addressing racial bias is a necessity, the government’s proposal to reduce jury trials is not the answer. We stand for reforms that make our justice system more inclusive and equitable for every woman. It is important that government listen to women, centre women’s experiences in discussion on reforms and build a justice system that serves women who have been subjected to violence and harm.” @Keir_Starmer, @DavidLammy, @sarahsackman, we trust you listen before rushing through proposals. rightsofwomen.org.uk/vawg-sector-le…

Jewish memory carries a long familiarity with how civic safeguards begin to thin. Rarely dramatically; a practical reform here, a sensible efficiency there. Something temporary. Something administrative. Something that seems perfectly reasonable at the time. Until slowly, almost invisibly, the distance between citizen and state begins to shrink. Constitutional safeguards don’t exsist for the governments we trust. They exist for the day power falls into the hands of someone we do not.

There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that this ludicrous policy will address the backlog and none whatsoever that it speeds up waits in RASSO cases. @Keir_Starmer is not only wrong on this, he knows full well that @DavidLammy hasn’t got the evidence to push this through.

The Lord Chancellor claims that cutting jury trials will help women and girls. 30 organisations working in this area disagree. They should be believed. Cutting jury trials risks undermining justice for women and girls, Lammy is warned theguardian.com/law/2026/mar/1…

The letter in full, link below Dear Deputy Prime Minister, Violence Against Women and Girls sector calls for the preservation of access to jury trials We write on behalf of organisations across the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) sector to urge the Government to reconsider the proposals contained in the Courts and Tribunals Bill 2026 to restrict access to jury trials in England and Wales. rightsofwomen.org.uk/wp-content/upl…
The CBA@TheCriminalBar

Thirty organisations representing victims of violence against women and girls (VAWG) have written to the justice secretary @DavidLammy, urging him to drop plans to significantly reduce the number of jury trials. The groups said that the proposals, which will affect court cases in England and Wales, will deepen mistrust in the justice system among victims and distract from measures designed to reduce offending. The signatories, which include Rights of Women, the End Violence Against Women Coalition, Women for Refugee Women and various branches of Women’s Aid, added that they were “deeply concerned that the curtailment of jury trials risks unfair outcomes that undermine justice for everyone”. The letter, which has also been signed by Fiona Rutherford, the chief executive of the law reform charity @JUSTICEhq, said those working against violence were particularly concerned for women and girls who were “unjustly criminalised” as a result of their abuse, some of whom have faced trial themselves. Another signatory, @centreWJ the Centre for Women’s Justice, has long campaigned on the issue, saying that about 70% of women in prison or under probation supervision are known to be victims of domestic abuse. It argues that some domestic abuse victims charged with criminal offences have acted under duress or in self-defence. theguardian.com/law/2026/mar/1…

.@DavidLammy I commend the Lady Chief. Never have I known the most senior Judge in the land speak publicly against a policy of government. I am well aware of the concerns the Lady Chief has and as you know it isn’t limited to what she has been able to say in a public forum.

This shocking report highlights the challenges Jewish students are currently facing on campus and the urgent need for stronger action by our educational institutions. Jewish students deserve the same university experience as everyone else. Instead, many are confronted with a climate of hostility where antisemitism is normalised and terrorism is glorified. Education is essential to ensure students arrive on campus understanding what antisemitism is and where it can lead. When it appears on campus, institutions must show zero tolerance. Thank you to the @UJS_UK for this timely report and for everything they do to support Jewish students.

A picture of my parents taken during the Second World War. They were married on 15 March 1937 so I’m thinking of them both today - and particularly of my mother, of course, because it’s Mothering Sunday. My parents are always at the top of my Gratitude List.

Former DPP Ken McDonald KC makes an important point here Labour MPs should be concerned about: If you keep more cases in the Magistrates (by raising their sentencing power), fewer Defendants on modest means will get legal aid. That is a recipe for miscarriages of justices.
