The King’s grandmother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, was recognised as Righteous Among the Nations for saving Jews during the Holocaust. Following the horrific rise in antisemitism and the recent terror attacks targeting Jews, the King has visited Golders Green today. At a time when so many in this country, including too many of our leaders, struggle to show real solidarity with the Jewish community, we know where the King stands. He follows in the footsteps of his grandmother.

In response to today's King's speech, Chair of the Bar Council Kirsty Brimelow KC has emphasised our opposition to restricting jury trials, called for more investment for the justice system and welcomed plans to reset UK-EU relations. In our immediate reaction, Kirsty has highlighted the Courts and Tribunals Bill, Immigration and Asylum Bill, and the European Partnership Bill ➡️ bit.ly/4wp4mUG

Donkeys are the most beautiful, companionable and gentle souls on earth. But every year 6 million are stolen, slaughtered and skinned for fake Chinese medicine. Some people are stupid cunts.

What is so chilling nowadays is not simply the resurgence of antisemitism itself but watching people who once proclaimed the loudest commitment to tolerance and human rights now unable (or unwilling) to recognise the same poison within their own ranks dailymail.com/debate/article…

Whenever I post about antisemitic incidents in this country, and about the fear, exhaustion and uncertainty many in the British Jewish community are feeling right now, I receive countless messages from allies across the UK asking the same question: “What can I do to stand with the Jewish community?” The answer - amongst many other things - is to speak up, call out antisemitism wherever you see it, and stand visibly with the Jewish community. Because the reality is that British Jews are under attack. Daily stories of arson attacks, stabbings, attempted car rammings outside Jewish schools, Hitler salutes outside Jewish shops, abuse on social media, anti-Jewish graffiti in our communities, Jewish people being assaulted on public transport and open glorification of extremism on our streets. And it is getting worse. The Jewish community is becoming more and more besieged by security. Synagogues, schools and communal buildings increasingly resemble fortresses. Parents are frightened sending their children to school. Jewish students hide symbols of their identity. Many Jews no longer feel comfortable openly expressing who they are in parts of the country they once called home. Too often, we hear words. Statements. Condemnations. But many Jews feel increasingly alone. This Sunday, there is a march outside Parliament against anti-Jewish hatred and extremism. A cross-communal gathering of Jews and allies coming together to say that this hatred, intimidation and violence cannot become normalised in Britain. Too often, Jewish people are told that support exists quietly in the “silent majority.” But silence is not enough anymore. Visible solidarity matters. Presence matters. Please join us. Stand with the British Jewish community. Stand against antisemitism. Stand against extremism. Because the future of this country depends on whether good people are willing to speak - and stand - when it matters most.

The Times reports today: "Adding to the pressure on ministers is a call today from the Bar Council... for the government to cough up a promised increase in criminal legal aid fees that was made five months ago." Chair of the Bar Council @Kirsty_Brimelow KC said: "If the government doesn’t invest in the lawyers who defend and prosecute cases we will see them leaving the criminal Bar again, which will lead to more delays in the system.” Kirsty has written to the government to ask for the promised £34m to be invested in criminal legal aid as soon as possible to address the government's concern over the shortage of prosecutors and defence barristers. Thank you, but I also feel so uncomfortable being thanked for an expectation that should be basic of everyone. I realised how important it was to be vocal and visible ally in 2023, when I wore a 🌈/ 🇮🇱 pin badge to the Attitude awards, right after the attack, and @RobbieRinder came over and wiped away tears, saying you don’t know how much we need this. I was so shocked, it put things in perspective of how isolated Jewish people feel.

I have lost 30 followers in an hour after sharing this video about anti-Semitism on my Instagram Story. How bloody revealing. If you are not a racist and want to follow me in the other place, I am here instagram.com/benjaminbutter

On Carnaby Street last night, a kid on a bike cycled up, saw it was me, looked friendly at first then offered up his favourite “lyric”: “Heil Hitler.” I wasn’t sure whether to share this. I hadn’t experienced that personally before. The most striking thing: I wasn’t shocked. No threat. No anger. Not a victim. Just: what has he been taught Hatred is learned. We are not defined by it. We answer it by what we teach.

Brilliant from the Criminal Bar Association

Listen to our Vice Chair Andrew Thomas KC and Geoffrey Robertson KC discuss why #JusticeNeedsJuries on The Standard’s Podcast. “The government is considering dropping juries for certain criminal cases in an attempt to reduce court backlogs. Will this move undermine British justice? In this bumper episode, host Tamara Kormornick speaks to a vocal opponent to the plans, Geoffrey Robertson KC, former judge and founder of Doughty Street Chambers, where Keir Starmer, David Lammy and Attorney General Richard Herman have all practised. She also hears from criminal barrister and Vice Chair of the Criminal Bar Association, Andrew Thomas KC, who both prosecutes and defends for the Crown, for his view on whether the British justice system needs as many juries.” Click here lnkd.in/ezF2A5tX

The government has rejected calls to bring in specialist rape courts rather than curtail the right to jury trial - despite it being a Labour manifesto pledge. We're now urging MPs to bring back the proposals for specialist courts when the Courts and Tribunals Bill continues after the King’s Speech. Unlike the restricted jury trial proposal, specialist courts have been shown to work. At Preston Crown Court, this approach saw a 16% reduction in waiting time for their case to be listed when applied to domestic abuse cases. Read more ➡️ bit.ly/4cSQLfl #JusticeNeedsJuries
