🚨 Pep Guardiola is leaving Manchester City. And before City fans start writing his obituary as the greatest manager of all time, let’s have a quick word.
19 trophies in 10 years at City. Impressive. Genuinely. Nobody is taking that away.
But let’s put some context around those numbers before the statues get commissioned.
Guardiola had the most expensively assembled squad in Premier League history at his disposal. Every single transfer window. Every single year. Limitless resources. A club willing to spend whatever it took, and a Financial Fair Play case hanging over them that somehow never seemed to slow anything down.
Need a full-back? £50 million.
Need a centre-back? £60 million.
Need a striker? £100 million.
Need depth? Buy another international.
Most managers are forced to solve problems. Pep simply replaced them.
Now compare that to Sir Alex Ferguson.
Sir Alex won 13 Premier League titles, 2 Champions Leagues and 5 FA Cups with a club he built from the ground up. He developed young players, rebuilt multiple generations and dominated English football for 27 years, not 10.
He did it through the Eric Cantona years, the Roy Keane years, the Cristiano Ronaldo years and the Ryan Giggs years. Different squads. Different eras. Same outcome.

@henrywinter Wouldn’t have been half the manager without billions….fact!

Pep Guardiola’s legacy? Look all around from park pitches to Wembley. So many teams and coaches have been influenced by Guardiola. More teams playing out from the back, full-backs inverting into midfield, inviting the press, passing through it, attacking the space. Teams evolving. City won the league in 2021 with false 9s. Then a real 9 arrived, Erling Haaland, as Guardiola tweaked and twisted again. Mixing it up, possession, possession, then going long to Haaland if needed. Mixing it up, possession in the centre, then releasing flying wingers Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo.
Guardiola’s legacy? Look at the coaches who learned from him. Enzo Maresca, his likely successor. And Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso, Vincent Kompany, Xavi and Luis Enrique. Look at his impact on England. Nico O’Reilly starts at left-back. Phil Foden developed early by Guardiola, not sent out on loan, embedded in the first team early.
He improved John Stones, Rico Lewis and Kyle Walker (who is now retired from England). Guardiola gave James Trafford a run in the cups. He gave Cole Palmer a chance before he craved more starts and went to Chelsea. Others have also moved on after a spell under Guardiola’s enlightened tutelage: Morgan Rogers, Liam Delap, James McAtee, Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
Guardiola has undeniably enjoyed huge resources to call upon during his decade at City. He was able to draft in Marc Guehi and Semenyo in January. The sport still awaits the verdict of the 115 charges of rule breaches, charges which City deny vigorously. But Guardiola's achievements deserve celebrating: 591 games, 416 wins, 20 trophies.
And so to the future. If it is confirmed that Guardiola is leaving after Sunday’s final game of the season, at home to Aston Villa, he will be greatly missed. Maresca is his mooted successor. He knows the club, knows the way Guardiola worked, and can seek to continue that work. It’s a relatively young squad that Guardiola has built. It’s a continuity job. Surely, though, Kompany would have been the man they really wanted. Club legend. But currently embedded at Bayern Munich.
Guardiola's legacy is encouraging innovation, total commitment, near obsession with his work and playing attacking football. This City side are entertainers, playing 4-2-4 at times in the FA Cup final on Saturday. Even if the league is beyond him, the title seized by a coach he helped develop, Guardiola leaves as a winner, with two more trophies this season - and countless memories. Good luck to Guardiola in whatever he does next. #MCFC

@lukestanley03 You missed out “Sir Alex Ferguson” at the end of that script 🤷♂️
English

They said he’d struggle in English football.
He won the league with 100 points.
They said he couldn’t win it back to back.
He won the Domestic Quadruple.
They said he’d never win the European Cup, he’d never win 3 leagues in a row and he’d definitely never win the Treble.
He did all three in one season.
He then did the unthinkable and won 4 leagues in a row.
The greatest manager of all time.

@bphillipsonMP Parents should feed their kids before they go to school..
Any decent parent knows this 🤷♂️
It’s not up to tax payers to feed kids because their parent don’t care or won’t give up their Sky subscription to pay for it!
English

With Reform UK, it's always about 'looking after our own' until it comes to feeding children.
Labour is providing over 6,400 children across Kent County Council with free breakfast clubs. Reform UK literally want to take the food from their mouths.

It’s impossible to be a campaigner against rape and not appear a racist.
400 sexual assault convictions by taxi drivers every year, almost exclusively Muslim
Of 4200 Stranger rapes in a 12 year period, 3780 were carried out by people born overseas, almost exclusively Muslim, they’re doing 75% of all the stranger rapes
2013 @NCA_UK release a report detailing that 75% of all rape gangs are Asian, again almost exclusively Muslim.

🚨🎙️Thierry Henry on why Celtic’s goal should have been ruled out as offside and Hearts have a case for a 3-0 forfeit, applies the laws of the game to it:
“Football laws are supposed to be based on consistency, not emotion. And when you actually break this game down properly, there are two enormous controversies that, in my opinion, completely changed the outcome of the title race and the SPFL just let it happen.
First, that Maeda ‘goal’ that made it 2-1? It should never have stood. Law 11 is crystal clear: Offside is judged at the moment the ball is played by a teammate. The scorer was offside when the initial pass went in, lurking in an illegal position for a good 3 seconds, gaining a massive positional advantage. Then he benefits from it and pokes it home. That’s gaining an advantage from an offside position, textbook offence. VAR drew their lines on the ‘second pass’ and said ‘onside,’ but that’s gaslighting. The player carried the illegal head-start straight into the goal. They hand Celtic the title momentum. Disgraceful.
Then comes the real scandal. Osmand bangs in the third with 30+ seconds left, game has to restart. Kick-off, more time to be played. Instead? Thousands of Celtic fans storm the pitch. Hearts players assaulted, shoved, punched, chased. Lawrence Shankland and others physically attacked. Chaos. No proper restart. Game abandoned due to home fans’ violence.
Law 5,The Referee: Full authority to abandon for outside interference. When one side’s supporters prevent the match from finishing and assault the opposition? Forfeit. Precedents exist, teams have been handed 3-0 losses for far less pitch invasions. SPFL/SFA competition rules allow awarding the match to the innocent team. Hearts players had to be escorted out for safety. The game was never completed fairly.
look at Slavia Prague recently getting a forfeit 3-0 loss for a similar pitch invasion in their derby. Fans storm, game can’t finish? Opponents get the win. Simple.
That’s why this game will always leave a stain on the title race for a lot of people. A controversial offside interpretation followed by a match that technically never reached its proper sporting conclusion because of crowd interference. And somehow Celtic come away with the league-winning result untouched.
Football rules are either applied equally or they mean nothing.”
