Iowa has some of the best farmland in the country but “we import 95% of our food” in the state “0.03% of our acres out of 24 million acres, it's roughly 9,000 acres in Iowa, is used to produce any produce food that will end up on your plate in its original form” “So it's primarily, it's all chemicals — they're producing ethanol, they're producing feed that will then be shipped out of state for animals and shipped out of our country for animals. Iowa has the best farmland in the world, I would say, and we import 95% of our food.” So there's a big movement of people that want to see, you know, homesteading and smaller farms crop up. But when you have out-of-state investors that are coming in and buying up land and jacking up the price of land, there's not one young person that can afford to get on land.”

Most farmers are stuck in a cycle of overproducing corn and soybeans because every other commodity price sucks too. The only way out might be banding together to form a co-op that actually builds a brand instead of just selling raw material. If you paired a group of hungry farmers with a seasoned CPG operator who knows how to get into Costco and Walmart, could that be the ticket to creating our own market? Or is the co-op model too broken to fix?

I published this article Monday, co-written with @markgoodw_in, but I was locked out of Twitter/X until now so here it is! Ohio has recently become the top destination for Big Tech data centers and AI infrastructure. This the story about how the state owes much of its rapid transformation into the so-called “Silicon Heartland” to a now vast array of public-private partnerships pioneered by the state’s richest man, Leslie Wexner, and his former money manager and fixer, Jeffrey Epstein. unlimitedhangout.com/2026/03/invest…

Every once in a while, a ewe will give birth to a lamb and reject it. There are many reasons she may do this. If the lamb is returned to the ewe, the mother may even kick the poor animal away. Once a ewe rejects one of her lambs, she will never change her mind. These little lambs will hang their heads so low that it looks like something is wrong with its neck. Their spirit is broken. These lambs are called “bummer lambs.” Unless the Shepherd intervenes, that lamb will die, rejected and alone. So, do you know what the Shepherd does? He takes that rejected little one into His home, hand-feeds it and keeps it warm by the fire. He will wrap it up with blankets and hold it to His chest so the bummer can hear His heartbeat. Once the lamb is strong enough, the Shepherd will place it back in the field with the rest of the flock. But that sheep never forgets how the Shepherd cared for him when his mother rejected him. When the Shepherd calls for the flock, guess who runs to Him first? That is right, the bummer sheep. He knows His voice intimately. It is not that the bummer lamb is loved more, it just knows intimately the One who loves it and has experienced that love one on one. So many of us are bummer lambs, rejected and broken. But He is the good Shepherd. He cares for our every need and holds us close to His heart so we can hear His heartbeat. I am a bummer lamb adopted and loved by The Good Shepherd!! Hallelujah!!

@harkness_sean We really should look at our operations as individual service companies: farm mgmt, custom planting, custom application, custom harvesting, custom hauling. The only time I think of hiring it out is load/time mgmt. Because if someone can make money doing it, so can I.

The trend here is becoming the big boys hiring out their harvesting. If you can get paid custom harvesting maybe making a comeback.

@osbornforne I’m afraid row crop farming is going to the CAFO model as the current guys age out. The big money players see this and are helping it happen. If Coops have a future role, it’s simply doing the physical labor for someone else. Probably Blackrock, State Street, VCFs,…

You've heard about the "Big 4" Meatpackers — a cartel of just 4 companies who control 80-85% of beef processing in the U.S. But did you know there's a similar cartel in fertilizer? 🧵

I suggest we spin some of our ethanol plants around to generate electricity from high-efficiency turbines (cogeneration of steam). The grid needs quick clean supply solutions. Some rural sites are paying over $.50/kwh. Corn prices imply electric generation under $.25/kwh. 🌽 ⚡️

Even facing a global fertilizer shortage and potential food crisis, Midwest politicians have no vision for American agriculture beyond using precious resources and land to grow ethanol to burn. The senior Senator from Minnesota:

Today I called on the Administration to allow for year round E-15. Increasing the amount of biofuels in our fuel supply is common sense. With gas prices skyrocketing and a war in the Middle East, we must be doing everything we can to bring down prices and decrease volatility.

In the past 24 hours, I’ve been a customer at four gas stations, Walmart, Hilton, FedEx, and three toll roads… At NONE OF THEM, did an employee of those places help me in any way. For routine transactions, unmanned is clearly the future. rhave.net

@Whale_Guru If you were the richest individuals and investment bankers in the world, and (in league with the government) looked at the problems of acreage allocation, annual subsidies, and the average age of a current American farmer… what would you be engineering?
