Satan rebelled and was cast down to that old world, and that generation of earth, prior to mankind, ended in judgment. God wasted it making it a ruin.

Without form and void, meaning that generation was wasted, in ruin. Tohu and bohu. Genesis is to account of restoration. Light thawed the earth.
