Seeing Syrian men freeing the jails, including of women & children, & never asking about the religious or ethnic or even personal identity of the prisoners gave me such faith in the Syrian people. They did not ask anything. They only said: "Be Free."

This is really powerful. There were huge rallies in 2011 trying to topple Assad before the army fired into the crowd. Today they are gathering in celebration. The future is uncertain, of course. Chaos, extremism, sectarianism always loom. But for once, there is real hope.

Day 2 home from hospital and things are not going well. Pretty shattered from my 8 days in ICU and still really sick, which I guess I thought would magically ameliorate once I crossed my own threshold. Unsurprisingly, meds are not as effective in pill form as IV. Really rough.
