I am an Education Specialist for English learners at the Alabama State Department of Education, Instructional Services Section.

Let’s consider how the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework intersects with serving multilingual learners. #UDL (CAST, 2016) is a powerful instructional framework commonly used in special education to design equitable learning environments for ALL learners. 3 core principles guide the planning process & lesson delivery: 1. ENGAGE 2. REPRESENT 3. EXPRESS UDL can support & benefit MLs because it pushes us to become intentional about providing choice, connecting with students backgrounds and prior knowledge or experiences, forming goals, embedding multimodal forms of representation & increasing ways learners respond. Let’s design instruction that is equitable & accessible to all learners. #teachingideas #teachingresources #teachingkids #multilingualkids #bilinguismo #bilingualchildren #universaldesign

Started my day @jneelem in Ms. Hall’s 1st grade class with a counting collections, headed over to F E Burleson @HartselleSchool to work with Mrs. Halverson’s 3rd graders, and ended my day @MoultonElem watching the Constitution Day Parade. It was a great Friday! @AMSTI_Athens

Packed a lot into our final EL Teacher meeting! Looked at plans for next year, discussed resource needs, & pored over newly released ACCESS scores. We also celebrated a retirement in the EL Teacher family & had a team building activity making guitars! #mcslearn #MadisonESL
