Regardless it’s notable Labov was interested in lexical variation back then and from a semasiological perspective (what can be called a cup) as opposed to the standard SLx onomasiological perspective (what words can be used to refer to a cup).

Final response from the journal 'Language Variation and Change': 'LVC is concerned with variation in the linguistic system (phonetics/phonology, grammar, discourse-pragmatics)...lexical variation on its own is outside the remit of the journal.' 1/2
