The manager of a Japanese baseball team resigned after being arrested for allegedly assaulting his daughter. He admits it happened. Many Japanese, including the former leader of the country's main opposition party, are speaking out in his favor. Why? The daughter sought advice from ChatGPT, and followed its advice by calling a consultation center to report him. She was reportedly not expecting he'd be arrested and have to resign from his job. Some are even arguing that the daughter is in the wrong for reporting what they claim was a single minor incident of drunken violence, and that society should be more forgiving.

👉 Full story on the resignation of Yomiuri Giants manager Shinnosuke Abe. Abe publicly apologized following his arrest on suspicion of assaulting his 18-year-old daughter during a family dispute at their home in Shibuya, Tokyo and formally resigned as manager of the Yomiuri Giants. According to the Giants organization and investigators, Abe attempted to stop a fight between his daughters around 6:00 pm on Monday night, but became angry after being talked back to and grabbed his daughter by the neck and threw her to the ground. No injuries were reported. Police also reportedly determined Abe had been intoxicated at the time. Abe admitted to the allegations, saying, “I told them to quiet down, but she talked back to me and I lost my temper.” At today’s press conference, Abe apologized for “causing concern and inconvenience to baseball fans and everyone involved in professional baseball for matters involving my family.” His daughter also released a statement that was read aloud by Abe’s representative. She wrote there was “no punching or kicking involved” and said some details became exaggerated in the press due to how she initially explained the situation. After the incident, she consulted ChatGPT, which recommended contacting child welfare services. Upon hearing of the situation, the office decided to contact police, leading to Abe’s arrest at their home. Abe’s wife was also present at the scene. “I was the most shocked when the police arrived. When I saw my father being taken away, I broke down in tears,” she stated. Abe was released from custody shortly after midnight on May 26. The incident comes just before the start of interleague play, with the Giants set to open against the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks at Tokyo Dome. Coach Hideki Hashigami will now serve as interim manager.

I am not an economist but one of the interesting things about national debt discourse is it is rarely done on a balance sheet basis. Takahashi Yoichi is a former MOF economist who has written some interesting (to an amateur like me) books about this. A lot of national assets are public works like roads and harbors which can’t really be sold. This is why the MOF rejects the balance sheet approach to thinking about national debt. That said however there is also a certain amount of land and liquid assets on the books too.

Crazy that despite the highest debt to gdp ratio in the world, japan has so many state assets their net debt is still lower than the UK and the US. looking at this comparison it's insane how emaciated the UK state is

Grad school friend visiting Tokyo from U.S. asked for restaurant recommendations. Went to one good candidate, site is in Japanese, but hey they have translation. Um, that doesn't help much when the drop down menu is all in Japanese! 🤨

It's not rare to encounter Japanese who believe that the average Japanese person pays much higher taxes than people in other developed countries. However, when compared to other OECD nations, Japan doesn't stand out for making its people pay very high taxes. The graph used in the quoted viral tweet misleadingly focuses on the tax rate for the highest income bracket - people who make over 40 million yen ($250K). Less than 1% of Japanese are in that tax bracket.

Lance Gatling - 丙午年 Year of the Fire Horse!
good question. The Takeuchi and Ikeda embassies to Europe, then the Tokugawa embassy to the Paris Exhibition 1867, which showcased Satsuma Japansch Zaky, which lives on today. That's not all bad. The Meiji era Iwakura mission was the last such "embassy" I think. The 1920s naval arms reduction treaty talks were not so designated diplomatically, I think.

On May 14, 1860, the first Japanese embassy to the United States arrived in Washington, D.C. This official diplomatic mission, dispatched by the Tokugawa Shogunate after Japan's opening to the world, was greeted with grand ceremonies across the United States and captured the attention of the entire American public. After the ratification of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce, this Japanese mission took the historic first step in U.S.-Japan diplomacy.
