@kataraesque It's important to keep her decision independence here, but as social creatures we also depend on the ones closest to us and that's not a problem, that's healthy and natural.

@kataraesque You hit the nail on the head. This episode is about Katara first and foremost, not Zuko or Aang. However, she does forgive Zuko and herself after Aangs council, so his help is important. Zuko's help is also a little important to spur her into action, but is dangerous as enabler.

@AlzaeTheKing @Faelo_oo Yes, obviously the fault is Aangs since he could react but chose not to just to let Zhao kill the spirit. But Zuko has no fault, obviously. 😭😭

@puppyochako I'm rewatching and she is a daring, impulsive hero as early as episode 1. While Sokka is pissing his pants not knowing what Aang is she only thinks about saving someone in need. She is fucking amazing.

On top of that, her character is flattened into either the “mom friend” or a love interest who needs saving by a man, instead of the complex character she is.

Ngl, I find it funny when the fandom complains about Katara’s lack of content or priority, yet hardly anyone actually asks for it. Her lack of solo fan content is especially noticeable. Even her Tumblr tag is dominated by ships, especially that on, instead of Katara herself.

@puppyochako Also, really important in this is how Zuko finishes his arc through sacrifice, and not beating Azula with power.

It’s also why Katara and Sokka do not comment in between Zuko and Aang’s debacle. It doesn’t really concern them. (tho lowkey bad writing since they are Aang’s friends but I understand what they were going for)

I like it because it shows that Zuko’s redemption isn’t finished. He still has to unlearn the Fire Nation’s worldview toward the Air Nomads. It allows Aang to prove the value of nonviolence in a world shaped by violence, to show that Air Nomad values deserve to exist.
Cleo Rive@oat_bunches

@beamofpearlaqua Him calling Aang “Guru Goody Goody” still pisses me off to this day. Like, YOURE ALIVE AND HAVE FRIENDS because of Guru Goody Goody

@uukhanu Grooming is not definite. She is a bad person who was set on a bad path. Not a good person, not even an average person. She did not deserve what was done to her, but she also never showed us any sign of good. However, she still deserves a chance to change after she payed for evil

biting the bait, it has to be her choice but the choice itself simply doesn’t exist in her mind. to azula, she is who she is & to change is self-betrayal. atla fans love to trivialize the impact of grooming to just a “bad childhood” like huh she’s still a child??
Daimeon Kennedy 𓃵@ChibRisky

Azula had a bad childhood, but that does not automatically make her sympathetic or deserving of redemption. She must first admit she did wrong things, and people must be willing to forgive her. Zuko and Iroh grew up in the same bad environment but chose to become better. Azula keeps rejecting any chance to change and prefers to stay cruel.

@puppyochako I really wanna do that but at that point might as well do book 1 too. I think I would need a fresh rewatch to justify the wall of text. When I get to it in the future I can send it to you.

Well this checks out since Aaron was pretty against the guru episode during the book inception funny enough. I’m curious on what he wanted to do as an alternative.
Aaron Ehasz@aaronehasz

@NathanParsons98 missed the desert, but I understand why they had to cut it -- did not miss drill or guru. When the gaang "breaks up" in ep 6 it was so well set up and a tragic beautiful character driven nadir... loved it.

@puppyochako Yes, for sure. Avatar state and Katara are just the vessels to explore Aangs character. Both of these things are introduced at the start of B2. Avatar state episode 201. Cave of two lovers episode 202. That's not a coincidence.

@puppyochako For me Guru is similar to the Lion Turtle, that might be why Ehasz doesn't like it. Sadly, the story needs it because the theme was not as well explored during the season. They had many episodes to do a better job.

@puppyochako Don't get me wrong. Guru is not a great episode. It is a huge exposition dump about Aangs feelings and how the lore of the avatar and spirits work. However, it is a NEEDED episode for the show to work. That is because B2 is too subtle in exploring the tension between AS x Katara

@puppyochako Guess 2 episodes he wrote? Guru and The Drill. Ehasz didn't want the creators touching the part of the work where he had the most control, B2.
