@bobbymiller73@LaoisToday@GaryLanigan1 The farm they own In abbeyliex used to be a fine tillage farm years ago.Maybe that could support a tillage enterprise now instead of a dairy one?I remember some supper carbon suppressing crops grown there years ago.
@Tom_Clarke The thing I have learnt about Isabel oats is if the grain is ready cut it , if you wait for the straw to ripen and bad weather hits it will open up and shell. Very good yielder and a nice grain.
My Spring Oats (KWS Isabel)
The grains are hard but still have green flag leaf and stem...🤔
Only third yr growing spring oats. Is this normal?
Thoughts and opinions welcomed...
@rgpoulussen In all spannering there are times when the sledge is the tool of choice ⚒️. Not sure what's happening here, think it's posed shot, too many men standing around especially the guy kneeling behind and the fella with the fag bending down to have a gawk 😳
@nookost@Hylo67 That disc is on cross cutters and normally shallow runs work but in fairness to the machine it will work deep also to help with levelling .
@nookost@Hylo67 Old ley takes that bit more and lucky enough now stones . The deeper cultivation will also help with leveling a bit as the field would have gotten 3 passes in total. Tillage is vey important this time of the year to get a successful grass seed strike.
@bobbymiller73@think_or_swim@irishexaminer I also looked into this , have 14000sqft of south facing roof Space and looked into putting solar on this space to feed the grid . Unless I am not using it myself it is not feasible as the tariffs back into the grid are way to low . They would rather cover productive land !!!
“Smart investment money accepts the move to EVs is now as inevitable as transition from horse-and-trap to motor car was a century ago”
My take is in @irishexaminer today

As a tillage farmer growing malting barley it’s great to be part of this forward thinking inventive by #diago#guinness on making tillage farming improve there carbon footprint and carbon neutral farming
@think_or_swim In the report it also says in agricultural there has been a drop by .75 from 2020 to 2021 while this is not a lot is it not a step in right direction?
@Roeagri The atmosphere responds to emissions, and agri emissions are going UP fast. Efficiency is a side show when gross emissions keep climbing. Efficiency only helps if output is stable or declining. This is basic physics.
Incredible to consider that Irish agri emissions in decade to 2011 went DOWN by 15.6%, then from 2011-2020, they shot UP by 19%, a disaster designed by industry-driven gov't policy.
Does new #Climate Action Plan do anything to reverse this policy disaster? (spoiler: "no")
@think_or_swim personally I’m a tillage farmer and agri contractor, every day we are looking at ways to help with climate change,we have invested heavily in modern machinery and technology to make ourselves more efficient and lower our carbon footprint. if we don’t mind the land it won’t produce
@think_or_swim If you read into it does say that every kg of milk produced now has has a lower carbon footprint to the earlier review in 2011,farmers are making big steps in doing there thing for climate change .Maybe more so than any other industry but it’s always easy attack the easy target
