In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we are highlighting significant African American environmentalists and biologists throughout February. Warren M. Washington was the 2ndAfrican American to earn a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences. He spent his career developing groundbreaking atmospheric computer models, many of which helped scientists initially understand climate change and improve future climate projections. Washington served leadership and presidential roles on many boards and committees including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Science Board, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Washington earned numerous awards for his research, service, and technological advancements, including the National Medal of Science in 2010. Dr. Washington has served advisory terms under US Presidents Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and Bush!
