We are a coalition of civil society actors—student groups, lawyers, academics, and activists—united by the hope of reviving Rohith’s murdered dreams.

Caste discrimination in universities is not an exception. It’s the system. We don’t need sympathy. We need law. The #RohithAct is about accountability—and we’re done waiting. Our movement now has a home: 🔗 campaign4rohithact.wordpress.com Read. Share. Organise. Act!

Activists Intensify Push for Rohith Vemula Act, Demand Karnataka Government Release Draft Bengaluru The Campaign for #RohithAct has stepped up pressure on the #Karnataka government, urging it to release the draft Rohith Vemula Act for public consultation without further delay. A coalition of activists, academics and student unions accused the state of dragging its feet on a legislative promise made nearly a year ago, despite repeated assurances from the leadership. Chief Minister #Siddaramaiah had announced in April 2025 that the legislation would be enacted following a call from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. In December, a model draft was submitted to Minister Priyank Kharge and reportedly accepted with minor revisions. Yet, despite claims that the bill was in its final stages, the government has not made the draft public. The coalition, formed in July 2024 amid growing concerns over dropout rates and suicides among #SC/#ST students, has demanded a clear legislative timeline and enactment of the bill during the upcoming Budget Session. They also called for accountability from the Chief Minister to honor his public commitment. Momentum for the Act has grown after the Supreme Court stayed the University Grants Commission’s 2026 Equity Regulations. Activists argue that existing safeguards, including the SC/ST Atrocities Act, fail to address what they describe as “everyday harassment” and “institutional exclusion” faced by #Dalit and #Adivasi students. They contend that the absence of a dedicated framework perpetuates caste-based barriers in higher education. The proposed #RohithVemula Act, named after the #Hyderabad scholar whose death in 2016 sparked nationwide outrage, is envisioned as a comprehensive anti-discrimination law. @siddaramaiah
