Sure, qgis has his stability issues, but damn, Arcgis Pro is more unstable than I feared. Even without extensive analysis or use of big datasets. Any tips #gischat?

😊 Discovered today that a map I created in 1999 using #ArcView 3.2 is still online and being used by the Flint River Watershed Coalition. #IAmOld #GIS

🚄 Where can you go by train in Europe - 8h edition! I made an update to chronotrains.com, with configurable travel times from 1-8h, and more frequent data updates.

This is *not* a map of population, or any kind of human infrastructure - but yet it matches human settlement very closely. What #dataset is it? Can you tell? o_O

Zijn er hier nog meer geo-data specialisten die zich op landelijk of regionaal niveau bezig houden met het Nationaal Programma Landelijk Gebied?

@RolfGeo @fortiain @pokateo_ I think the point still stands, if one is a new grad today, looking at the skills worth investing in the next couple decades (anything beyond that is wild speculation) I think it's wise to keep in mind software engineers are getting more involved in GIS in my humble opinion

I am frequently asked for career advice from new GIS grads. Unfortunately, I don't have the capacity to advise most, so I'm compiling a list of GIS mentoring programs or places folks can go to get support. #gischat please share if you know of anything!

@MaxLenormand @pokateo_ @fortiain I fully agree. I just wanted to add that the gaps between GIS, IT, policy/business people are getting more complex to bridge and also demands for GIS and geo data are growing so importance of GIS-specialised management is increasing rapidly, at least in the Netherlands

@RolfGeo @pokateo_ @fortiain Definitely! My -albeit a bit provoking point- is more that software engineers build the tools used for GIS today And a lot of GIS tasks are increasingly becoming more and more automated So learning to automate stuff is a valuable skill in my opinion

@pokateo_ Learn Python GIS isn't a job, it's a speciality that software engineers can learn about. I would recommend listening to this recent conversation with @fortiain on what automation in our field might look like (doesn't even consider OpenAI) Starts here: youtu.be/WaY8e7YqaWI?t=…

@pokateo_ Gis can be so much more than programming and analysis. It's also about data management and governance, geo data infrastructure, cartography, and more. My advice to anyone who enjoys using GIS is to figure out what aspect of GIS they enjoy the most.
