The Gadsden purchase was a good buy.
The total value now of all real estate in the purchase is surely much higher than whatever was paid for it.
I guess there weren't really any bad real estate buys in the 1800s, no matter how unfavorable the land looked.

I guess, just for me, looking from a perspective of ensuring American power/White power in the US, it seems like taking it would’ve been the better move. It may have even lowered the birthrates in the parts of Mexico taken.

What’s interesting to me is that, they didn’t because they held anxieties about incorporating millions of racially non-White Mexicans into their republic. But it seems like that’s already happened, just without the territory to accompany it.

WASPs have been made fun of, driven into oblivion in literature and film as boring. They eat simply, dress plainly - ski and play tennis but do little else. But they looked outwardly uniform because they had a lot going on in their minds. They did build the United States after all. The law, its early culture and holidays. All our early writers are WASPs. Their real crime is giving up their cultural hegemony without a fight. That’s why they are the butt of jokes in Woody Allen movies. Not because they’re actually empty and dumb - because they were weak and gave up.

1) America wants to maintain its hegemony. China wants to usurp it, at least, in its region. It’s the same reason for war with Russia, if anything, *China* is the aggressor to the current world order.
2) It’s not a question of “if”, but “when”. And the answer is probably “soon”
