Reflections on Hosting Awards Ceremonies at the Houses of Parliament: Over the past few years, I have had the honour of attending several awards ceremonies held within the historic Houses of Parliament - including both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. It is always a privilege to be in such an iconic setting and to meet many interesting people. Based on my observations, I have noticed a trend that may be worth sharing. The Houses of Parliament have become an increasingly popular venue for awards events, including some organised by groups from overseas. Some attendees have mentioned that fees paid to receive awards presented at these venues can be substantial. To the best of my knowledge, Parliament functions solely as a venue for these events, and the awards themselves are not officially conferred by the Houses of Parliament. Hosting an event in Parliament requires sponsorship by an official Member of Parliament or a Lord. At the beginning of many events, the sponsoring Member of Parliament or Lord typically reminds attendees that filming and photography are not permitted for commercial or broadcast purposes without prior permission. Some committee rooms within Parliament have specific restrictions prohibiting filming or photography for commercial use. That said, I have observed that some guests and organisers have recorded and occasionally shared footage online or on television. Additionally, some ethnic news channels have broadcast footage from these events without seeking prior permission. My understanding is that permission should be obtained in advance for any filming intended for broadcast. Some organisers appear to follow this protocol, and Parliamentary officials have informed me that filming is generally not allowed without prior approval. It seems these guidelines may not always be consistently applied. Given the historic and democratic significance of the Houses of Parliament, it seems important that events held there uphold the highest standards and respect for official rules. I share these reflections based on my personal experiences and conversations. It may be helpful for organisers and attendees to be mindful of the protocols involved when hosting or participating in events at Parliament - particularly in committee rooms. Please note: The views expressed here are my own and based on personal experience. This post is intended for informational purposes only and does not constitute formal allegations or statements on behalf of any organisation. @UKParliament
