Why bother with the regular season? Just start the tournament. The heart of college sports is rivalries and those rivalries were already harmed by the destruction of conferences done by the football playoff. Greed sees only now, not the future. The NCAA is making a big mistake.
Pat Forde@ByPatForde

Everyone knew ncaa tournament expansion to 76 was inevitable. Almost nobody wants it. Those trying to argue its merits are gaslighting you. I’ve written it many times — it’s a lousy development that contributes to the erosion of what makes college sports great.

46 years ago @AP guessed the future might be electronic newspapers. After working a temp job on the Baseball Desk, my first permanent gig at AP was a home data retrieval project tested in 50 Miami homes and 20 in Dallas. Someone at The AP was about 20 years ahead of the curve.

I cherish the 18 years I worked for The AP with journalists whose talent was surpassed only by their dedication. Stay #UnionStrong
AndrewSelsky@andrewselsky

To all my former @AP colleagues who accepted buyouts, some not so willingly, and to those who might face layoffs, I express my solidarity and affection. You're the best in the business. The world owes you a big thank you for all you have done to tirelessly report the news.❤

I had the privilege of working with Bill Fields for 16 years at Golf World magazine. He is a brilliant writer whose passion for golf is eloquently expressed in this wonderful book.
Lorne Rubenstein@lornerubenstein

Note to golf Twitter. @billfields1 has written a beautiful memoir called A Quick Nine Before Dark: A Life in Golf. It’s nostalgic & current, romantic & deeply felt, melancholic & richly layered with Bill’s long experience as a journalist. It made me feel & think. I loved it.

More viewers and more readers may lead to more revenue but it also leads to a lower standard of journalism if that revenue comes from a cheaper click-bait product rather than in-depth reporting.
Walk and talk@10onthestemp

@ronsirak Your tweet seems to say that companies choose not to reach a large audience. Total lack of business sense. I thought more viewers/readers equals more revenue. Love your support of women’s golf. Peace.

While there is still a big audience for in-depth investigative reporting, fewer outlets are willing to fund it, opting instead for cheaper “click-bait” journalism. The films All the Presidents Men and Spotlight displayed the reporting that can be done when properly funded.
Kevin Van Valkenburg@KVanValkenburg

What isn’t valued is transactional scoops, stuff that has no shelf life because it would have come out anyway. This is true in politics and sports. What does have value is real investigative reporting unearthing what powerful people want to keep hidden. Still big audience for it.

On #NFL draft night in Pittsburgh it is appropriate to recall the @steelers draft of 1974, perhaps the best ever by any team. With their first 4 picks the Black & Gold took Lynn Swann (WR), Jack Lambert (LB), John Stallworth (WR) and Mike Webster (C). All are in the Hall of Fame.

My first editor, Lamar Hoover at the Lancaster (Pa.) Independent Press, told me: “The reader doesn’t care what you know; they care what the people you know know. Find experts, interview them and get out of the way.” I learned that the words “I” and “me” should not be in my story.

The LPGA plays 13 events outside the US this year.
Conrad Golf Rankings@jerichsen66

@ronsirak So, the value of international golf is limited to a couple of events held outside the US every four years, for true golf fans.... that's not even close to accurate. Care to try again.

10 years ago, at the @Chevron_Golf Championship, then known as ANA Inspiration, I held the Silver Claret Jug — which goes to the winner of @TheOpen Traditions are part of what makes golf special. And traditions are created by time, not money. LIV Golf learned that the hard way.
