In my dream last night I spoke to a large crowd in a public setting. “All students can learn and achieve at a high level.” Cheers and applauding “But saying it is not the answer. We must believe it; embrace it; and make the necessary changes to ensure it happens!” 🎉 🎊 🎉 🎊

Who has the perfect high school schedule out there? A schedule that works well for students, teachers, everyone involved! What does it look like?

The Dept of Ed just announced that because of budget constraints we can no longer fully fund all 5 letter grades. They are seeking input on which grade to remove from the lineup. Serious suggestions only as this is a serious matter. Thank you.

In a note my wife wrote me today: "When you doubt your skills as an educator, that is the clearest sign that you are dedicated to your students. And THAT is the greatest quality of a truly amazing teacher" She's right, and it's exactly what teachers need to hear.

Started running again recently. Contemplating signing up for my first marathon for sometime in May. Having a goal and a running routine has been so helpful. In just two weeks I feel re-energized and happier. Love me those endorphins.

“We accepted the idea of differentiated instruction a long time ago because we recognized that all students are different. If this is true, then we must also accept the idea of differentiated assessment.” 😍😍 #BuildingThinkingClassrooms @pgliljedahl

Admin. Those teachers who step up and take on the harder cases because they can work with “those kids.” Write them a card this week. We’re only a quarter of the way through the year, and they’ve already spent a full year of empathy. Lift ‘em up. Long road ahead.

@ArtTeacherLife7 @Sully5207 Not my intent to put this on teachers. Poor wording. 😔 I used to give short on-the-spot assessments to track learning and growth. When I was aware that a student was struggling, I asked them to attend extra help and assess the next time the opportunity arose on that standard.

@Sully5207 Yup, and it's easy to blame teachers while we have been screaming that standardized testing goes against what districts want us to do. There is no time for everything and making passive comments without providing a solution is annoying. I would like to know what he did...🤔

How did you asses students when you were teaching? I understand you are the assistant principal now. Also, it should be crystal clear that teachers have been saying for a long time that standardized testing doesn't work, but like with everything else, no one listens to us🤷🏻‍♀️
Ron Taylor@RonTaylor79

I’m blown away that teachers still assess all students the same way on the same day. Is it not crystal clear that students learn at different rates? Why then are we sticking to a system that is SO flawed. And worse, most times students are never given an opportunity to recover.

@sammarsbich I’m so sorry to hear this. I work in a district where teachers are given the autonomy to make instructionAl decisions for the diverse learners in their classes. Students are given choices on how they would like to share their learning and we celebrate new ideas and approaches.

Teachers would love to implement a diverse education with plenty of support and scaffolding. We are told NO. We are told we don’t have the money, the time, the resources, etc. A teacher can only do so much without the support of administration and the district. Stop being dense!

I’m still blown away that people still think that teachers have autonomy over their classroom…it’s always blaming the teachers who 90% of the time have no control over how the curriculum is taught or assessed. Bring your energy to the district whose rules govern my salary!

@DavidG_CSLP I agree David. I feel administrators can model more flexibility with evaluations. There have been times when a teacher has shared that they were having a tough day and we simply do not write a report that day. We have a conversation and visit the classroom soon after.

@Deanoyoyo1 It wasn’t my intent to criticize teachers. I apologized earlier today when I realized the tweet was offensive. This is a systemic issue and I do have thoughts on how to make some changes without it burying teachers with more work. I hope to share details soon.

@RonTaylor79 It’s fine to criticize teachers, but do you have a better way of doing a standardized test? The logistics of what you are proposing would be impossible.

@MaskedSquish61 Your first sentence nails it. We have the answers. It’s the system that does not allow for it to happen. It’s impossible to build a new system while working tirelessly under the current system.

@RonTaylor79 Mastery grading, student voice/choice for 180 students- can’t be done during work hours. Why are we expected to volunteer 30 hrs/week? Fight the system? Every contract we’re villains. Maybe I wouldn’t be so upset if I hadn’t spent 5 hours at school on a Sat w more at home today

@RonTaylor79 It’s not a teachers issue but is most definitely a ‘system’ issue. What do we value in education? How do marks correlate with understanding? Who legitimizes that knowledge creation? Is summative evaluation a true story of what a student knows? These are my queries!

@EllingtonErinm Thank you for the feedback @EllingtonErinm. I’m sorry for my poor choice of words. I wish I had spent more time reviewing the tweet prior to sending it. This is a learning moment for me. It is not up to teachers to lead the charge in fixing a broken system.

Some people have asked if I have a solution. I’m looking through some old tweets to see when I last wrote about a different approach to assessments. I’ll add it to this thread when I locate it. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond. I appreciate your feedback. 4/4

Districts could kick it off during PD and allow teachers time to work collaboratively during dept and faculty meetings. No work should be expected outside of contractual hours. 3/4
