“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” Einstein, which I would rather put as “The world as we have created it is an expression of our knowledge. It cannot be changed without changing what we know.”

Can one suppose that a statement might be true even if it is possible that we would never know if it were true?

“Every person is a creature of the age in which he lives and few are able to raise themselves above the ideas of the time”, said Voltaire. The age of AI is proving him wrong.

@Philip_Goff Discussing "the nature of reality" assumes that there is "reality" (A or THE reality) Why would that be assumed? We would, surely, first need describe what "reality" is.

The attempt to uncover the nature of reality is of intrinsic value.
Zen.Buddha.Tao@indybuddhist

@Philip_Goff Someone explain: let's suppose the 'is it conscious?' debate could somehow be settled (!) one way or the other, what exactly would have been achieved? Would we have moved closer to some kind of existential breakthrough? Really? What would that look like? We all start meditating?

@skdh Anything that increases human intelligence is good. Why the pessimism about AI, which has that aim? Of course, it doesn't happen all at once. Our intelligence didn't happen in one go. Think of AI as Augmented Intelligence.

It won't be long and physics will be overrun by AI slop, mark my words. It's a disaster waiting to happen for academia that has been optimizing for quantity over quality for decades, you can basically see it coming. x.com/getjonwithit/s…

I get especially sad when I see researchers at my university, including very senior professors, excitedly saying "Look! Now I can use <random GenAI tool> to read papers, write papers, derive equations, write code, ..." And it's like... why are you even here, man? (1/2)

Happy New Year! The first Sunday of the year discussion is on January 5. Where there is thought, there is doubt, a critical tool for questioning assumptions and uncovering deeper truths, shaking the natural desire for certainty. For a link to this meeting, message me.
