What the hell is going on in Torrance County? Our elected officials, the people who work for us, have signed NDAs on “Project Mars.” A massive development on state trust land, tied to a Department of Defense contractor, and the public is being locked out of the conversation. Ranchers only found out because their leases were threatened. The rest of us get rumors, closed-door meetings, and “we can’t talk about it.” These officials take an oath to represent the citizens of this county, Not a defense contractor, Not a mystery developer, Not the state land office’s private interests. When public servants sign confidentiality agreements that keep the people they serve in the dark about decisions that will permanently change our land, water, traffic, and future, that is not governance. That is a betrayal of transparency. We are not children. We are the taxpayers. We are the ones who will live with whatever gets built here. We have every right to know who is behind it, what it is, how much water and power it will take, and what the real deal is. NDAs for elected officials on projects this size should never be acceptable. Open the books. Hold the meetings in the light of day. Stop treating the citizens of Torrance County like we don’t deserve a seat at the table. This is our land. These are our officials. And we are done being left out of the decisions that affect our lives.

@RoninDrogo @NMSaints No one really knows. It’s believed to be Apache, most likely Apache (Warm Springs/Chihenne or related groups), though possibly earlier Jornada Mogollon.

This photograph shows a Jicarilla Apache couple, taken in the mid-to-late 1880s. The pair has long been known in historical photographic records by the romantic title “Romeo and Juliet.” The Jicarilla Apaches are an Indigenous people who speak a Southern Athabascan language. Their traditional territory centered on the southwestern United States, primarily northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, with ranges that also extended into parts of Texas. The woman’s hand resting on the man’s shoulder and the closeness between them create an intimate, affectionate portrait—noticeably warmer and less formal than many of the stiff studio photographs of Native subjects from that era. The image was made by photographer A. Frank Randall and is held in the Huntington Library’s collection of his Apache photographs.

I've been to the casino at Inn of the Mountain Gods many times. An Apache custom (according to their website) is that they consider it rude if you look them in the eye, so I always try to remember that when I go. WindTalker, if you want to go down a fascinating rabbit hole, look into the history of the Apaches and how it intersects the legendary gold that was in Victorio Peak. Avoid the book "What Men Call Treasure" because it's a debunker and a bunch of bullshit. There is plenty of evidence (including an interview with my dad) in books such as "The Gold House" by Clarence and Whittle. Of particular interest is a pictograph site called "Bloody Hands" near Victorio Peak, which is a revered spiritual site and something of a record of the Apache Wars. Google AI has more, and way too much to copy and paste here. Suffice it to say, the treasure in Victorio Peak was real and may have also been an Apache cache for goods stolen from settlers, as well as prisoners left to die. "The Gold House" is a three volume set of books going into minute detail and really solid proof that the site was a treasure trove dating all the way back to the days of the Spaniards. I heartily recommend it if your interests involve the intersection of Apache, settler, and Spanish conquistador history. A good "beginner's" primer is "100 Tons of Gold" by Chandler. It's a book you can start with to tell you if you're interested enough to dive into the three volume "The Gold House." I did. And even though Victorio Peak was cleaned out decades ago...THERE IS STILL GOLD OUT THERE....

Some friends and I ate at a restaurant a few years ago, and our friends paid for the meal. I personally thought they left a decent tip, although it wasn't extravagant. The next thing we knew, our server was following us out the door to ask if our friends hadn't made a mistake in the amount of tip they left... Well, it wasn't a huge tip, but it was within reason. Yet this guy is trying to guilt trip us into leaving more. Our friends explained that they thought it was fair under the custom of how much of a tip to leave, but that wasn't good enough for the server. He made it a point to indicate that for the sterling service he'd given he thought he deserved more. IIRC the wife of one of our friends finally told him that maybe he'd be happier in another occupation!

During COVID you weren't even allowed in the building without proof that you'd gotten the death shot. I made the decision I wasn't going to get the shot even if it cost me my job and everything else. I could only talk to my mom by sitting outside while she looked through a window from the inside. When I finally got to see her it was when Hospice got involved. All she could do was sit there in a wheelchair and try to talk. Her glasses were gone. She was shaking like a leaf babbling incoherently. And people wonder why I want things to happen to Fauci that I can't post on X.

@RoninDrogo @SomeWelder When hubs had to be in assisted living I was there every day 8-5. They treat those that have involved family with a bit more care and that’s really sad.

I won't go into great detail, but legally they are only required to change someone's diaper once a day from what I understand. And I think I had my mom in the best one money could buy. It's a good thing I'm a nonviolent person, especially after finding out complaining doesn't do any good.
