4 years ago today, I purchased CryptoPunk #3831. What was meant to be my first and final purchase of a major artwork, turned into the birth of The Medici Collection. And for that, today I feel grateful. In these 4 years, art has flipped my life upside down. Opened my eyes to new possibilities, put me in the middle of a once-in-a-lifetime art renaissance, and allowed for friendship with artists, collectors and critics I never thought possible. While it hasn’t always been obvious what comes next, today I feel we are all rowing in the same boat, in the same direction: To cement our movement as the defining one of this lifetime. If you’re here as an artist… If you’re here as a collector… If you’re here as a writer or critic… or gallerist or dealer… I commend you for your contribution, no matter how big or little. Each one of you matter, each one of you make the movement what it is. Today, I feel more confident than ever in saying: We are here to stay. Where were you #OTD (in fact, on this exact day – Friday, July 18th, 1969) 56 years ago? I can tell you where I was…on the way to the Moon! Happy #Apollo11 Friday!

July 20, 1969. “Contact light, engine stop.” The Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle touched down at Tranquility Base on the Moon. A few hours later, Neil Armstrong and I stepped foot on the Moon, with Michael Collins orbiting close-by. An achievement resulting from years of incalculable effort, commitment, and team work. We all did our part to see President Kennedy’s words become reality: “We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win, and the others too.” I couldn’t be prouder to have completed this mission with the hundreds of thousands of people that helped get us to the moon and back home. God bless the USA and all of humankind.
