My late parents met the Nixons as one of my father's US partners lived near them in the late 1970s & would invite the Nixons over for lunch (during Nixon's pariah years) & Nixon would often hold court. I recall my father saying Nixon warned c1977 of Shah's Iran falling apart

i think a lot about that guy in the early 1900s who went to bosnia to the last illiterate communities in europe and found out they were still reciting homer epic-length poems to each other from memory.

Instead they froze domestic training slots, expanded provisional and fast-track IMG licensing in 18+ states, and kept the replacement pipeline wide open. 2,862 PGY-1 positions sat unfilled in the 2026 Match while qualified American graduates were left unmatched. This was never about shortages. It was engineered scarcity followed by replacement. Lift the cap. Prioritize American doctors. End the two-tier system. Bookmark if you see the pattern. @48hghtchrdnck @L0m3z And the worst part is, it chokes out actual AI innovation. Most tech innovation in America has come from enthusiasts and hobbyists who operated without fear of shareholder nonsense. But they now being choked out by consumer PC parts being prohibitively expensive.

Same thing is happening near me-- they're trying to stick one next to a sensitive archaeological site on the river. Some shady characters who aren't from around here are trying to make bank & ram this through & the locals are ticked, in conjunction with a general rising sentiment against any more development in a rural area getting suburbanized.

Data centers are a proxy for largely inarticulable concerns over tech and the emerging likelihood that AI is going to radically change our way of life much in the same way the internet has, and driven at least in part by two populist intuitions: one is that the further human value is abstracted out from the production of tangible things, the worse it is, and also that if the value of that thing isn't easily explained, if its mechanics are opaque (like exotic financial derivatives) or even unknowable (like AI), then I, the average guy, am probably somehow getting screwed.
This doesn't mean the concerns are fake or unjustified, only that they are often misdirected.

Actual AI innovation in America will come from a guy who built a workstation and realize “wow this is inefficient”, followed by countless hours tinkering until he figures out a way to drastically lower resource consumption while upping efficiency and output.

Tech bros aren’t interested in innovating. If they were, they wouldn’t be cornering every facet of the consumer PC and electronics markets to serve giant and inefficient data centers. They’d encourage mass production of high quality parts for enthusiasts and the consumer.

If the tech bros acted like the Robber Barons, people would be far more supportive of data centers because they’d be getting schools, libraries public works & other things out of the deal. But instead they get shat on in every facet.

It's good but many consider the sword fight from the Polish movie The Deluge (1974) the most realistic and historically accurate sword fight.
Both actors trained extensively for months and got so into it one of them almost died filming this.
