The COINTELPRO program was terminated in 1971. That was the FBI program focused on surveilling, infiltrating, and discrediting domestic political groups that were considered "subversive" in the 1960s. The SPLC was founded in 1971, the same year COINTELPRO was ended. 🤔

Many of us remember this. The emergence of the "Information Super-highway." I think about this part a lot: when the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal blew up, and when the Starr Report came out, it was uploaded as a PDF to the Internet. That was the first time in my memory that the public had raw access to a document of that nature. We could all go read it for ourselves. Sometimes I try to imagine how that story would have been massaged and spun in the media, if they were the only ones who had access to the report and the rest of us had to rely on them to tell us what was in it. It was a watershed moment in the history of politics and technology.
