🤔I've had something on my mind about the book business. If you’re in the publishing or media industry, or you follow these industries, maybe it’s been on your mind, too. Here's what I’ve been noticing.... rozfoster.com/newsletter

My latest essay offers a take on the publishing industry's rapid pivot away from its own unique value in order to mimic the value offered by brain-hijacking and passive content purveyors. There are short-term profits, sure. But where will it take the book business in the long term? rozfoster dot [SubmentionableStack] dot com

⚛️The nuclear energy industry wants you to forget more than 80 years of a recurring, historical nightmare. The Trinity Test, the life of Oppenheimer, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and fears of nuclear attack endless repeat in media. Dread of atomic power has become so deeply embedded into your subconscious mind, it's going to be difficult for you to accept the nation-wide proliferation of nuclear reactors on the rise. What narrative will the nuclear industry try to persuade you to believe to give atomic power a positive spin? Here's a short video explaining why forceful media campaigns are on their way to convince you to forget an historic cultural fear ⬇️🎥(~8 mins.) youtube.com/watch?v=JhucCA…

The DoD's war with @AnthropicAI has been sidelined in the news cycle by war with Iran. But with American civil liberties at stake, it's worth a much longer look. Expert on government contract law, @JTillipman is a critic of the DoD’s new high-velocity strategy of regulating AI by contract. In @lawfare, she writes that third-party contracts “were not designed to provide the democratic accountability, public deliberation, and institutional durability that [law] provides." She warns that speed in the present will create systemic problems in the future. In the hands of any extreme ideologue, right or left, AI tech fused with government process can easily become legal, normalized domestic surveillance in which enforcement can find YOU with 1-Click. Loved this article from @laurenweberWSJ on what AI leaders are advising their kids about how to prepare for our AI future. Apart from the dark irony of one founder advising youth to go into nuclear ... or cancer treatment, and a software exec who throws "communications skills" under the bus, the overarching counsel was spot-on. What's needed will be a broad, rich education, one that prioritizes adaptability, critical thought, human skills and ethics. Read Lauren's article, but if you can't get by the paywall, here are what I find to be winning answers: Ethan Mollick, management professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, says "generalist jobs, where there are many different skills bundled together, are good jobs in an AI world." For example, in "law and medicine" where you need to be good at a lot of things. Mollick advises young people to insure themselves against unpredictability by "being broadly educated, being deeply educated, being flexible in the face of change, maybe saving money to get through the disruptions—the things you’d do in any time of uncertainty. A liberal-arts education matters more than ever." Jaime Teevan, chief scientist and technical fellow, Microsoft, and trustee at Yale University tells her kids: "Metacognitive skills will be very important—flexibility, adaptability, experimentation, thinking critically, being able to challenge things. Developing critical-thinking skills requires friction, doing things that are hard, doing deep thinking. For that, a traditional liberal-arts education is really important. [P]assing judgment, being accountable and responsible for decisions that impact people and society, that’s foundationally important. That’s true at a macro level, at a time of extreme disruption." Daniela Amodei, president and co-founder, Anthropic, believes her kids will need "human qualities: the ability to relate, to empathize and be around other humans. What’s not going to be replaceable is how you treat other people, how well you communicate with them, how kind you are. [H]umans have an intrinsic desire to make meaning and create things just because they enjoy the act of creating. Humans are surprisingly resilient and adaptive, and our desire to be creative and to be in groups won’t go away." wsj.com/lifestyle/care…

👂I’m trying something new, an audio version of my essays, starting with my last on nuclear energy’s branding overhaul in the United States. If you can both see and let go of a powerful narrative from your past, you’ll be among the first to spot a fascinating, radical shift that’s being introduced to the way Americans think about one of the most important forms of power in the world: atomic power. ⚛️ Thanks for listening. 🎙️ rozfoster.substack.com/p/the-coming-a…
