Today, hubris—used to describe a person’s excessive pride and self-confidence that, through a loss of touch with reality, turns into uncontrolled ambition, even a kind of intoxication with power—can also be observed in real life.

Yet the hubris that we encounter as the gravest mistake made by heroes in many works—from Greek tragedies (such as Sophocles’ Antigone) to literature (J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings series) and films (Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon)—does not occur only in films.

There is concept that capitalism both feeds and is fed by: hubris (hybris). In Ancient Greece, this term was used to describe resorting to violence in order to humiliate, belittle, or dishonor someone.
