Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källén ius stated the company is open to defence production if it makes economic sense, noting the world’s unpredictability and Europe’s need to boost its defence profile. This reflects wider European industry moves towards increased military manufacturing as governments seek greater self-reliance in arms and equipment production.

US, Canadian, and Mexican grids face major constraints in supplying gigawatt-level power for frontier AI training, whereas China has rapidly expanded its electricity infrastructure, positioning it to support larger, more compute-intensive facilities despite fewer sites overall.

US operates around 4,000 data centres compared to China's roughly 365-450, the AI race now hinges on power scale rather than quantity, with training demands surging from about 100 MW two years ago to 1 GW clusters today.

Former US Ambassador James Jeffrey stated that Turkey has contributed at least as much as the United States to securing NATO interests, especially across the Middle East, due to its border proximity to multiple conflict zones. Turkey is set to host the NATO summit in Ankara in July 2026, the second time after 2004, reflecting its heightened strategic leverage within the alliance amid ongoing tensions in Ukraine, the Caucasus, and the Middle East. The comments align with Turkey's advancing domestic defence industry, including a recent order for 1,900 thermobaric aerial bombs from manufacturer MKE, designed for fortified targets and enhanced shock effect. x.com/Defence_Index/…

China announced it's successfully cloning of six super high-yield dairy goats (four males, two females) in Shaanxi Province using somatic cell nuclear transfer from elite Saanen donors averaging over 2,800 kg milk yield annually. The cloned embryos were carried by surrogate goats for around 150 days, resulting in natural births of six healthy kids without surgery, marking the country's first batch cloning of such high-performance dairy goats led by Northwest A&F University researchers.

During his visit to Cuba, CIA Director John Ratcliffe delivered Trump’s message: the US is open to economic & security engagement — but only if Havana makes fundamental changes. The main demand: shut down alleged Russian & Chinese intel listening posts used to intercept American communications. Ratcliffe called it a key condition for better ties.

Trump on Fox News: "I don't want independence for Taiwan. We don't want to fight a war 9,500 miles away. Both Taipei and Beijing need to cool it down." Trump clearly opposed the idea of Taiwan independence, that's a big blow to Taipei.

The UAE pushed for a joint military operation against Iranian threats, but Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and others chose restraint. The UAE ultimately acted alone, while the rest of the GCC prioritized diplomacy and de-escalation to end the war and improve relations with Iran by avoiding what they saw as a trap. Gulf countries could cooperate with Iran in several areas if they move beyond the barriers reinforced by US hegemony in the region.

Trump announces China to buy 200 Boeing jets — first major order in ~10 after talks with Xi Jinping. Analysts anticipated a significantly larger commitment of up to 500 planes, with expectations centred on the 737 Max, as Boeing has lost substantial market share in China to Airbus during this period. The news provides a trade boost for Boeing but fell short of forecasts, contributing to a decline in its share price as markets priced in higher volumes from the Trump-Xi meeting.

Satellite imagery from May 2026 reveals two Russian Borei-class nuclear submarines at the Rybachiy base in Kamchatka fully covered in anti-drone netting, marking the first time entire vessels rather than just sails or piers have received this protection. Located 7,400 km from Ukraine in the Pacific, these strategic submarines each carry 16 intercontinental ballistic missiles with multiple warheads, forming a key part of Russia's nuclear deterrent. The measure indicates Russian military concerns about drone vulnerabilities extending to remote high-value assets, following patterns of similar netting at other Pacific Fleet facilities.

Xi Jinping warned Trump in Beijing: Mishandling Taiwan risks direct US-China conflict and could push bilateral ties into a "very dangerous place." Xi called Taiwan the #1 issue in US-China relations. Clear red line drawn. America must stay resolute on deterrence and alliances. Peace through strength.

Trump just landed in Beijing with Tim Cook, Elon Musk, and Jensen Huang on the plane — that alone tells you everything about what this summit is really about. While the agenda lists Iran, Taiwan, and trade, the subtext is simpler: two giants trying to avoid a catastrophic break while quietly competing for the future. China enters this room with rare earths, a 5% GDP growth rate, and Xi's unshaken confidence. America enters with a war in the Middle East draining its attention, a Supreme Court that just clipped its tariff powers, and a president who needs a visible win. The power dynamics aren't what they were in 2017. What we'll likely get isn't a breakthrough — it's a managed truce. More soybeans, Boeing planes, maybe some semiconductor language. What we won't get is resolution on Taiwan, structural economic reform, or a real deal on Iran. Ordinary people in Beijing told CNN they want neutrality and peace. Ordinary people everywhere probably feel the same. This summit isn't about solving anything. It's about buying time — for both sides. And honestly, in today's world, that might be the most valuable thing two superpowers can do.

Trump & Xi meeting in Beijing this week could deliver a smart, limited “managed trade” deal: modest tariff cuts on ~$30B of non-sensitive goods each side, more US energy & ag exports, while keeping strategic tech protections in place. Pragmatism over perfection. Dialogue beats escalation. Both economies — and global stability — stand to gain if it lands.

MizarVision, a Chinese geospatial intelligence firm, was added to the US Treasury's sanctions list on 8 May 2026 for publishing open-source satellite imagery of US military activities during Operation Epic Fury, the joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran. The company responded by featuring the official US sanctions notice in a social media recruitment post, framing it as an appealing job perk with the message "Welcome to join us". This event takes place against the backdrop of the 2026 American-Iran conflict that began on 28 February with extensive US-Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian military sites and leadership, including the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

China has converted a Chengdu factory into a "dark factory" with AI-driven machines and autonomous vehicles operating nearly 24/7, more than doubling production efficiency of structural components for the J-20 stealth fighter, according to a South China Morning Post report. The facility requires minimal human involvement, reducing costs and eliminating the need for round-the-clock staffing, building on mass production of the J-20 that began in 2020. This advancement shows China's accelerating use of full automation in aerospace manufacturing to scale output of its most advanced fighter jet, equivalent to the US F-22.

Trump to visit Beijing’s iconic Temple of Heaven with Xi — only the second U.S. president to do so after Gerald Ford in 1975. A symbolically powerful stop during this high-stakes state visit. The 1420 UNESCO site was historically used by Chinese emperors for rituals seeking harmony between Heaven and Earth, lending symbolic weight to the diplomatic gesture amid current US-China tensions.
