On a December day in 1975, a young Swedish student named Charlotte von Schedvin sat down in New Delhi for what she thought would be an ordinary portrait. The artist was Pradyumna Kumar Mahanandia, known simply as P. K. He had grown up in a poor village in Odisha, earning a living by sketching portraits on the streets of Connaught Place. As the days passed and Charlotte returned for more sittings, the conversations became longer than the sketches. Before she left India, they were married. Then reality caught up with them. Charlotte had to return to Sweden, while P. K. stayed behind to finish his studies. A plane ticket was far beyond his means, but giving up was never an option. In January 1977, he sold nearly everything he owned, bought a second hand bicycle, packed a few clothes and his art supplies, and began a journey that would take him more than 11,000 kilometers across Asia and Europe. He crossed countries including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey, relying on the kindness of strangers along the way. When money ran out, he drew portraits for people he met. Some offered him food. Others gave him a place to sleep. Every act of kindness carried him one step closer to Sweden. After nearly five months on the road, he reached Charlotte. They built a life together in Sweden, raised a family, and decades later are still one of the most extraordinary examples of love refusing to be limited by distance, money, or circumstance. A bicycle could never compete with an airplane for speed. But for one man, it was enough to carry him all the way to the woman he loved.
