Norbert Singer, a master aerodynamicist, designed and fixed the overheating gearbox of the Porsche 917 LH (long-tail) that had podium finishes in both 1970 and 1971. Mezger solved the era’s brutal turbo lag with the intercooler, - cooling compressed air to prevent engine from exploding. He also condensed the mechanics for the turbocharger, using smaller turbos with an exhaust bypass valve (wastegate) The 917/10 had pioneered the smaller turbos in 1972. While the 917/30 was the first Porsche race car to equip intercoolers in 1973
