Today we're announcing Runway's expansion into Japan: we're opening a Tokyo office and investing an initial $40M in the country, as we build on what is already one of our largest and fastest-growing markets. We've tripled our enterprise customer base in the country in the last 12 months, with Japan becoming our third largest market globally. Companies like Yamaha, NHN and SoftBank are adopting Runway across marketing, advertising and creative content, and this expansion brings us closer to Japan's leading companies in gaming, media and robotics. Custom voices are now available for Runway Characters. Design new voices from text prompts and start building Characters that sound exactly like you want them to.

Runway Characters now supports camera and screen sharing. Users can share a live feed and the Character will see, understand and respond to what's on screen. All in real time via the Runway API.

Last night, Senior Director of Applications, @yining_shi led a Runway Characters Hackathon where attendees learned to build intelligent real-time video agents directly into their apps, products, games and services. It is the medium. -Christopher Harrelson of Why Brands shared a striking data point: designers using Runway have seen a 5x efficiency gain — enabling more work, faster iteration, and higher-quality outputs. Runway's own @theeddylee grounded it all in a sobering reality: only 10% of US businesses use AI in production, and 55% of corporate communications are still text-only, even as video drives 70% of internet traffic. Last week we debuted our new real-time video agents with one of the hardest demos possible: live television. The BBC is now using Runway Characters to augment segments of their programming. Wild to see this live. So excited for all the new possible applications to come.
