We didn’t when I as growing up Catholic. In fact, my parents told me we couldn’t understand it without the church
Fr. Bayer Holz@gonefishin1948

@ATradCatholic I've heard a preacher say: "Catholics don't read the Bible, they just ignorantly worship the Pope and their priests and statues!" I just smiled and walked away.

@gonefishin1948 In 1993 when my dad saw my Bible laying on a table he was curious enough to ask whose it was and why was it there. We didn’t have one in the house when I was a young Catholic

The protestants and evangelicals don’t want you to know this, but the only time the phrase "faith alone" appears in the Bible is in James 2:24, where it is explicitly rejected: "You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone".

@gonefishin1948 I’m at the church 5 days a week plus Sunday. What makes you think we’re closed?

@mbird12 I can't trust a thing he says after his "New Perspective on Paul". Sure, he SOUNDS smart...but he's just not someone we should listen to.

Did N.T. Wright just dismantle the traditional view of Adam and Eve? 🧐 In our latest discussion, Wright suggests the biblical couple might have been "hominids" chosen for a specific purpose rather than the first biological humans. Is this a necessary bridge between faith and science, or a step too far? The push-back has been rancorous! michaelfbird.substack.com/p/when-adam-be…

To say "I won't go to church becaus the church hurt me" is short-sighted and selfish. I've also been hurt by a church. But I'm glad I did not assume all Christians, or all churches are like the one I was hurt in.

@WesleyLHuff I keep saying, I just wish they'd dig it and either prove or disprove it, but that would likely cut into tourism dollars in a big way

So this whole Noah’s Ark discovery… yah it’s not legit. If we could deal with reality for just a moment and suspend what a lot of people *want* to be true rather than what is true — pretty much everything about the facts coming out of this story are embroiled in sensationalism and non-credible archeology. I believe there was a Noah and an Ark. But the formation in the Anatolian Mountains is almost certainly not the remains of that.

@ShinarSquirrel It is amazing how often pastors are judged harshly becuase their wife doesn't play the piano and isn't the event coordinator.

Been subbing the last 6 days as middle school PE teacher. It’s occurred to me that constantly reminding kids of little things is probably making me a better pastor.

@WWUTTcom In some areas, it may be true that everyone wants a Baptist church, but not rural Nebraska. There is a small pool of folks that are evangelical. We don’t get the nominal Christians that just identify as Baptist

@WWUTTcom I know people that go to a church only because it’s Catholic, or Lutheran. In my area, we don’t have anyone that will only attend a church because it calls itself Baptist. As a kid growing up Catholic, for all I knew, the Baptists were sacrificing cats on Sunday mornings. 1/2

The most Google'd church names are still Baptist or First Baptist Church. And yet I've witnessed a number of churches drop "First Baptist" or even "Baptist" out of their name in the quest for being edgy. It's a mistake. Just tell people who you are and what you believe.
Brady Shearer@BradyShearer

Ryan Burge ran the numbers on 1,244 church plants. The two words most used in new church names were "Life" and "City." If you're naming (or re-naming) a church and one of your ideas has either of those, consider that may overlap with other churches in the region.

Protestants often assume that prayer itself is the highest form of worship. So when Catholics ask Mary or the saints for intercession, it appears to them as misplaced worship. But in Catholic theology, worship reaches its fullness in the Eucharist. That is the difference.
