Al Carns: How Labour can win again What is the point of Labour if it does not represent Sheffield, Stoke-on-Trent, Barnsley, Swansea and Aberdeen? What is the point of the Labour Party if it cannot replace despair and frustration with hope, stability and purpose? The party was founded to give ordinary working people security, dignity and bargaining power over their lives. That is exactly what I believe, and it must be our mission again. We do not need more slogans, strategies, press releases or commissions. We need action. People in this country do not expect perfection. But they do expect seriousness. They expect stability and fairness. And they expect a government that is on their side. That is what Labour must be again. It is how Labour defeats Nigel Farage. And it is how Britain recovers. @AlistairCarns newstatesman.com/politics/uk-po…

@Layo_FH No different to the Kent and Surrey places they border which consistently vote Conservative. Affluent and nice places to live with little grievance to base a political strategy on.

@JamesHenryChard @MilkmanMeme You’ve just perfectly highlighted that there is absolutely no point to the Lib Dems. A rag tag bunch of people of varying ideologies happy to stand under a yellow banner and dodgy bar charts in lieu of policies.

A few people have asked what we'll do with no conservatives, greens or socialists on our Council. Well, I'm chair of the Lib Dem Councillor Group in Richmond upon Thames... and I'll happily introduce you to several of each.

The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting. Reform wants Labour MPs to remove the Prime Minister. Because they know that they will be able to call for a General Election with credibility - the same credibility that we had when we called for a General Election every time the last Gov did this. Stability is key.

I have just left my second count, and I am absolutely gutted for the brilliant councillors and new candidates who have lost, through no fault of their own. Good people rooted in their communities punished for our unpopularity nationally. Time and time again we heard on the doors people saying they feel nothing has changed. Nearly two years ago we ran on a clear promise of change, and the verdict from these elections is clear. That change has not been delivered with the ambition or speed people expected. Now is the time to reflect on that and ruthlessly focus on delivering real change with a clear vision of the country we want to see in years and decades to come… not endless months of leadership speculation, but focusing on delivering our mandate for building a better Britain.

Labour needs a second term to renew this country after years of Tory failure. On the current trajectory, we won’t get there because we will lose, and Farage will win. That should be nobody’s legacy. Having knocked on many doors in recent weeks – in Folkestone & Hythe, Worthing, Hastings & Rye, Thanet, Haringey, Islington – voters are frustrated with the pace of change; but they are still angry about the mistakes made by the leadership: winter fuel, benefit cuts, that LBC interview, Mandelson. Some say we will look like the Tories if we change leader. But would they have done better if they’d kept Boris in despite Partygate? Or kept Truss after she crashed the economy? We have to get on with the job we were elected to do. But we are hamstrung if we continue to be led by the personification of earlier – serious – mistakes. We must give the public a Labour leader with a clear vision, conviction and the ability to inspire if we are to stand any chance of turning things around. So I strongly believe that there must be an orderly transition of leadership well before the local elections next year. Otherwise, we are conceding defeat to Farage before we have even started.

Without minimising the dire results for Labour, it’s extraordinary how chipper the Tories are. They’ve lost 500 seats from a low watermark, lost major councils to Lib Dems and Reform, show no signs of recovery in the esp LD areas they need to win.

Me in @spectator Labour must also unapologetically be a government of the left: the one that has given rights to workers and renters, the one which has nationalised the railways, the one which has refused – for the first time in 60 years – not to enter an imperial war with the US
