Today, @ClaudetteIrere, Hon. Minister of State for Education, officiated the closing of the @RwandaPolytec Skills Challenge 2026 – #Hackathon, bringing to a close over two weeks of innovation, collaboration and industry-driven problem-solving. Speaking during the ceremony, Hon. Irere described the initiative as a clear reflection of Rwanda’s ambition to build a knowledge-based economy powered by skills, innovation, and stronger links between education and industry. “Today, @RwandaPolytec is demonstrating that #TVET is not merely producing graduates, but actively engineering solutions to operational challenges within industry,” she noted. She urged private sector partners to view students not simply as trainees, but as future technical architects capable of driving industrial growth, adding that their creativity, technical competence, and resilience are key to unlocking the potential of Rwanda’s industries. Hon. Irere also emphasized the importance of ensuring that the innovations developed through the Hackathon are scalable and ready for industrial adoption or incubation. Commending the students, she noted that their performance throughout the challenge demonstrated the professionalism, technical ability, and determination needed to help drive Rwanda’s transformation forward. She also expressed appreciation to the leadership of @RwandaPolytec, industry partners, mentors, and development partners whose collaboration made the initiative possible, calling for continued partnerships that transform academic excellence into national prosperity and industrial pride. The Hackathon brought together 48 graduating students who worked in 18 teams to address six real industry challenges provided by @AlwaysInyange, @airtelrw, @reg_rwanda, @delorenzoglobal, @GAMICO_LTD, and @remco_rw. The Hackathon concluded with the recognition of winning teams across the different clusters.

Here is a glimpse of the solutions developed by students in response to the industry needs across the different key research and innovation clusters: 💻Digital & Social Transformation Cluster * @airtelrw -Developed an Inventory Management System for End User Equipment * @delorenzoglobal – Designed a Smart City Virtual Laboratory for Training TVET institutions * @reg_rwanda– Built AI-powered Solutions to help Fight Vandalism in Power Infrastructure 🏭Transformative Manufacturing Cluster * @remco_rw – Developed a Multi-purpose Hydraulic Press for Manufacturing and Workshop Applications * @GAMICO_LTD – Designed a Tin Recovery System for Tailings and Slimes ☀️ Sustainable Energy Cluster * @AlwaysInyange – Developed a Solar Energy Plant Solution for Pumping and Lighting Beyond developing solutions, the #Hackathon challenged students to think critically, work collaboratively and apply their practical skills to real industry challenges and gain deeper exposure to workplace expectations. It also strengthened the connection between academic learning and industry.

This Friday, REG, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, joined Rwanda Polytechnic (RP) in concluding the RP Skills Challenge 2026 Hackathon — an annual innovation competition designed to develop practical technological solutions to challenges faced by institutions and industries in Rwanda’s day-to-day operations. The Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, @ClaudetteIrere, commended the winning students and called upon public institutions, @PSF_RWA players, and industries to establish stronger partnerships with @RwandaPolytec to support the implementation of student-led innovations. Among the outstanding projects recognized was an innovation directly aligned with REG’s operations, developed by RP Musanze students Eric Ndikumana and Ishimwe Steven. Their solution focuses on combating electricity infrastructure vandalism and theft. REG praised the project as a promising innovation and reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the students and Rwanda Polytechnic to further refine the solution and explore pathways for its practical implementation.
