We're too ape-brained as a country to collectively recognize the blatantly obvious endless cycle we're trapped in. We respond in all the wrong ways to the problems we want changed, and in response, those on the other side can only escalate what was precisely the original problem. Remember the collective solidarity we had, even if briefly, after 9/11? If that happened today, the only discussion that we'd hear would be people debating if it was Trump's fault or Biden's fault. Oh, and trust me, I know full well I'd be taking part in that discussion, exacerbating the issue, but I'd only be doing it in a retweet of a clip of Trump saying it was all Biden's fault, but he'd only be saying that because of the crazy amount of criticism he gets from the liberal media, who are only saying it because of the batshit crazy shit he does and says, and the cycle goes on and on and on... There's surely an origin to the cycle, some inciting incident, or comment, or action... None of us will EVER agree on what that is or who started it, because we're all seeing different narratives at different times from different people through different eyes. The solution to this race to the bottom isn't for each of us to push harder down on the gas pedal, it's actually to let off the gas entirely and chill the fuck out. The problem is neither side will ever be the first one to do it, because that's a losing strategy when you think the other side can't be trusted. It's Game Theory 101. When something happens that I feel goes against my values or morals or worldview... Do I say nothing because voicing my opinion will contribute to that cycle? If I, and everyone else who felt the same way said nothing because we don't want to continue the cycle, we're only allowing the original problem to get worse... The only way to break the cycle is for enough people to realize we're stuck inside of it. We're all running in a fucking hamster wheel, each half trying to spin it in the opposite direction, trampling each other in the process and ultimately going nowhere. The solution isn't to run faster, it's for all of us to collectively think "yo, fuck this hamster wheel bullshit!" and (PEACEFULLY/METAPHORICALLY) tear that shit down. We can't see the forest for the trees, we can't see there's another way. Rather than jump off, we figure we'll be able to get it to spin our way just as soon as we get rid of enough of the others trying to spin it the other way, but the only way they can figure out how to respond is by getting rid of us. The only solutions we ever manage to come up with for self-preservation are ultimately self-destructive. Want to end gun violence? Just get rid of all of the guns, right? If our response was to roll up to every American's house and confiscate their guns, what do we think would be the result? The most gun violence we've ever seen, of course. Sometimes the things we think are the solutions to problems are actually PRECISELY what's making the problem worse. There would be no need for pride parades if the evangelical asshats weren't advocating for them to be LITERALLY ERADICATED from public life. How can you chucklefucks not recognize that the reason fucking Drag Queen Story Hour exists is because of YOU. If you want to take something away from someone, they're going to fight even harder to keep it. If you tell someone not to be who they are, they're going to turn that shit to 11. On go the ass-less chaps and they're twerking down Main St. as a giant "fuck you" to the people who tell them them they can't be who they are. Of course, that just reinforces the idea that "tHe gAyS aRE iNfuLTrATinG oUR cuLTUrE anD coMInG foR tHe Kidz!1!", and the cycle continues. Some crazy psychopath commits an act of terrorism against a right-wing personality that many folks on the left really don't like, and the worst of them celebrate it like fucking animals. They pull up all the hateful things he said, all the hypocrisy and toxic rhetoric, as if that remotely justifies what happened today, gleefully laughing at what they see as ironic justice, smugly satisfied a husband and father has his life snuffed out... and guess what? What do they expect will be the response? Do they think that the things they disliked Charlie Kirk and other right-wing figures for saying or doing is going to get BETTER after what happened today? They're suddenly going to TONE IT ALL DOWN NOW?! Of course not. Because we're too ape-brained as a country to collectively recognize the blatantly obvious endless cycle we're trapped in. I genuinely believe that the majority of rational, reasonable people on either side of the spectrum all want off this fucking hamster wheel, we just have to open our eyes and see it for what it is before we'll have any change of getting the fuck off. Some tiny fraction of people on the left celebrate a tragedy like this, Twitter's algorithm amplifies it to make it seem like it's half the democrats, and the right says "just wait, you'll get what's coming to you!" Hell, some of them welcome the overreaction because it'll justify the EVEN BIGGEN overreaction they're just dying for. Literally. People on the left say nothing, and the right asks "WHERE IS YOUR OUTRAGE NOW YOU HYPOCRITES?!" People on the left do the right thing and condemn a tragedy like this and the right tells them to shut the fuck up and says the blood is actually on THEIR hands. All that response does is prime the left to act in EXACTLY the same way the next time some deranged, mentally-ill guy with a red baseball cap does something violent. All this does is take some subset of the reasonable people who condemn the violence or who stay out of the public conversation entirely, and turn them into the people who have become so jaded and apathetic that they forget all empathy and give in to their base instincts, celebrating the kinds of things we should all repudiate. It's almost like we're too fucking ape-brained as a country to collectively recognize the blatantly obvious endless cycle we're trapped in. Next time you respond, we can all benefit, myself included, from taking a moment to think to ourselves... "Is this ultimately going to make the problem I'm upset about better or worse?"
