Thanks to the Oxford fans who’ve shared their thoughts, it sounds like Donley isn’t as out of reach of Oxford as many have been saying. Spreading the fee across 4 years, for a club that will receive £9.5-12.5m in TV and solidarity payments this season, it’s well within their reach. Their revenue with increase from £8.5m 23/24 in L1 to >£20m in the championship. Still a big commitment, but if he becomes key it’s a good investment for a club with a Donley shaped hole in their midfield. The risk for Oxford (and Donley) is if they go down, it’s a big transfer before another tough season with half the revenue. Who knows. Tottenham have clearly viewed the reality that he is too far away from first team football for his value to increase here, so they might as well cash in. I fully expected to see him in the squad in the near future, but the final step is always the toughest, see Carroll, Skipp etc. Still, a lot needs to happen before he leaves, he will have to become a key player for Oxford for them to make him their record signing, and of course he has to see this as the best next step for his career, giving him a platform to climb the ladder.
