@tommydeas How about using a house phone at a hotel you’re not staying at to send from the TRS-80?
English

Double bonus points if you’ve ever slipped a hotel night desk clerk $5-10 to use the WiFi (at a place where you’re not staying), and triple if you’ve done same to open a room to let your crew catch the end of a college football game while on your way back from covering one.
Tommy Deas@tommydeas
You are not a bona fide sports writer until you (a) have been locked in a stadium, and (b) have filed a story from a McDonald’s parking lot using the WiFi after it has closed. (Bonus veterans points for using couplers in a phone both for a TRS-80.)

@RyanEigenbrode I've realized that you can't fire me because the joy of knowing that one day you CAN fire me is that what gets you through the day.
Once that's gone...

One part of my brain: "wow...things are going to get weird. IHow will this impact my life?"
The other part of my brain: "man, a meteor could hit by 2027."

Darren Woo is a 56-year-old firefighter. He works full-time for the Savannah River Site Fire Department and also volunteers for Columbia County. He's been a caddie at Champions Retreat, about 20 minutes from Augusta National, for six years. He's also a father to five boys.
Two weeks ago, Woo looped for three @RazorbackWGolf players during a practice round at Champions – one of them was Maria Jose Marin. When Marin asked Woo if he'd caddie for her at @anwagolf, Woo jumped at the chance. Behind the scenes, Marin's father, Jose, was giving up the bag, telling his daughter, “I love you with all my heart, but you need someone that knows how to handle a tournament of this level.”
Woo had zero experience at Augusta National, though his calming presence and positivity earned him the loop for Saturday's final round. Arkansas coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said Woo's southern accent was so calming, that one could "meditate to it."
Throughout the final day, Woo encouraged Marin with things such as:
Be confident.
You’re going to work it out.
Give yourself a chance.
Keep your head up.
Breathe.
"He was my greatest support during the whole week and a key to the victory," Marin said.
Woo revealed after Marin's win that he worked a 14-hour shift that ended at 7 a.m. Saturday, less than four hours before Marin's tee time. He also shared that he not only has one granddaughter but he has two more grandchildren on the way.
“Maybe I’ll be lucky enough and have three granddaughters," Woo said, "and they can all grow up to be like Maria.”

@TomDudd @MarchMadnessMBB Jill and I have this conversation a lot in our house. She is pro-suit; I am anti. I’m grateful we’ve been an anti-suit program at @LoyolaMBB since 2021.

Watching the coat-and-tie coaches in the Tournament… The other eight saps on the benches who have to comply look totally bummed.

It’s early but the first story of week is already developing.
Last week Brandon Berry was 12th alternate. A few days ago he sent me a message asking if other alternates were on site. At that time he was 5th alternate. There were a few, but since he lives in South Florida decide to come, since it’s only an hour flight.
He moved all the way to first by this morning. And now he has heard that a player might be sick and he might have a tee time.
Making the story that more compelling is how he is in the alternate position.
Last year at 2nd to last finals event Berry missed the cut by one. On Friday he accidentally played the wrong ball, resulting in a two stroke penalty.
Because of that he finished 76th in points, missing out on retaining his full card by one stroke over the entire season. Had he made the cut he was almost assured of keeping it.
Devastating mistake, but now possibly a chance to change that this week. He will get a good amount of starts but a made cut here goes a long way.
Also Brandon and his family are great people, it’s easy to cheer for him.
