“1 week since tryouts” should NEVER be a comment in April. Having kids placed on teams for next year when there is still 6 months of growth and development to be had is ridiculous. Every org outside of MN youth hockey is so backwards on this point.
CLANKO MEDIA@ClankoMedia

Not even 1 week since tryouts and already hearing about: -orgs folding teams -players asking to leave when they JUST signed -orgs scrambling to fill out rosters with 2nd or even 3rd choices One Hockey Director said it best: “Hockey’s 2026 is like Wall Street’s 2008”

@HockeyThinkTank 100% agree. No problem with mistakes, jumping into rushes whatever it might be but if that puck turns over be the hardest working guy to get it back or get back to support the rest of your team. Great clip!

KIDS: When you lose the puck, how hard are you willing to work to get it back? As a coach, I want you to make plays. I want you to be creative. I want you to play with no fear of making mistakes. The only stipulation I have is that when you try to make a play and you turn it over, you have to work like hell to get it back. Here's a great example from a team that MAKES A LOT OF PLAYS. Tampa turns it over in the Ozone and then watch the effort from the players to get it back. Hounds. They create another turnover and then get rewarded in transition. Coaches, amazing clip to show your teams!!

@ryanwhitney6 The early spin to create space, Stickhandling to avoid poke checks and put the puck in shooting position to get it up top. Gross goal!

If there were ever a stat to challenge the notion that you have to play on a super team or a team ranked high on My Hockey Rankings to make high level hockey, here it is. Unreal insight from USHL commissioner @GlennHefferan: Even after taking out kids from Minnesota (which is 25% of the USHL) and players coming in from other junior leagues, players currently playing in the USHL have come from 54 different Tier 1 organizations. 54!!! We always preach that everyone has a different path. For all the parents out there… Calm down, take a breath, keep your kid in your house under your parenting for as long as you can, and surround your kid with good people. You DO NOT need to put your kid on a super team ranked high on MHR for them to “make it.” Here’s an incredible piece of data from top junior league @ushl to back it up. I’m hearing horror stories about this stuff as early as 8u and 10u. This shows even at older ages the year before going to junior hockey that you can get there from multiple ways and places. Hockey directors - a great piece of information to send to your parents.

I had a junior coach tell me something once that was an incredible mindset shift in how to be more consistent and move on from the bad games. He told me: - 20% of the games you play, you’ll be at your best. Total flow state. - 20% of the games you play, you’ll fight it. Legs will be heavy, hands won’t be there. - The other 60% will be determined by your habits. And in that 60% middle - the better your practice habits, the more you’ll play towards that top 20%. The worse your practice habits, the more you’ll play towards the bottom 20%. We had performance coach Matt Fornataro on the podcast and we talked about consistency of performance. Awesome episode… check it out!

If you want volunteer coaches to come back, respect, support, provide resources, incentives, and give them a reason to give 100% for your club. If you want to develop players, develop and support coaches. They are your front line.

@drewcarlsonhp Only way to learn offense is to take some chances, make mistakes, learn and try again. Practice when you get the opportunity to practice. Watch other DMen you look upto and try it again!

We hear it all the time "Hockey IQ is lacking" "Defensemen have no skill" Why? Because in youth hockey, we staple D to the blueline and tell them to chip glass and put pucks below the goal line Allow them to act on affordances like this... The game will improve

@RyanFairbarn And if your dad didn’t play hockey at a high level and doors magically open you have to work twice as hard…..

If you want to make it as a Hockey Player the only one that can get you to that next level is yourself. You have to be willing to put in the work on the ice, off the ice, watching games, analyzing video to take yourself to the next level and separate yourself from everyone else!

The teams that are able to do this simple task are the ones they show they care, show they watched, show they know how to evaluate and improve players. These are the teams that are going to get players to future camps!

If parents and players are spending big money to come to a camp you SHOULD provide them with some feedback as to what they can do to be better, reasons why they didn’t make it even if is just a simple answer.

If you attend a Junior Hockey camp, do you think you should be given feedback following the camp? 🏒 A thread: 👇🏻
