The other week I posted about a shift in perspective which has me slowing down my design projects (which is working very very well) after years of condensing, cramming and cranking through the work at warp speed. Interestingly I can clearly pinpoint the origin of this behaviour. It’s all anxiety based.
It started right at the very beginning of my career; even with full-time jobs, I remember starting to rebrand the company before I’d even started working there. This came from a fear that I ‘couldn’t do it’. I was terrified that I wouldn’t be able to do the work so I started as early as possible, worked as quickly as possible, and showed the client as soon as I could to quell all the anxiety. This became a habit that was self reinforcing. Working this way *fed* the fear. And even after years of what everyone involved would consider successful projects, this pattern and anxiety stayed locked in place.
It would take me an absolute essay, and an incomplete one at that to describe what has broken this pattern, it’s just one part of a huge amount of deconstructing that’s taken place for me in the last few months.
What I can say is that I had a pivotal moment where it suddenly seemed clear to me that belief was a choice. I had a program running on autopilot that was auto-doubting everything I did. But I was suddenly able to see that I had the option to believe in myself. I know that sounds cheesy but it wasn’t a cerebral pep talk I gave myself, it was a deeply profound realisation. One I chose to embrace and has had a huge impact in my life.
What brought on this realisation? No quick fixes unfortunately. I don’t think you can just tell yourself you believe, every layer of you has to be ready to make that change. Meditation, reflection, creating space to respond and not react, clearing trauma, facing and unpacking self limiting beliefs. It’s the hardest work of my life, but man if you do the work, wow is it worth it. My entire baseline as a person has shifted.
