Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future

#Advent is a continuous call to hope: it reminds us that God is present in history to lead it to its ultimate goal and to its fullness, which is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Eight years ago, Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized and we honored her in our cathedral today. 2nd miracle through her intercession healed a young Native American boy hospitalized in Seattle from a flesh eating disease. St. Kateri, pray for us.

The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.

Kindness frees us from the cruelty that at times infects human relationships, from the anxiety that prevents us from thinking of others, from the frantic flurry of activity that forgets that others also have a right to be happy. #FratelliTutti

Relationships in community are often a greater indication of one’s relationship to God than the heights of mystical prayer. (St. Teresa of Avila). Loving the neighbor is how we start loving God.

St. Peter Claver reminds us that words alone are never sufficient in confronting evil and in upholding the dignity of all persons. Today, we are invited to pray and to fast for peace in our communities and for an end of racism and to do something specific to help someone in need.

To love everyone, including enemies, is difficult – I would say it is even an art! But an art that can be learned and improved. True love, that makes us fruitful and free, is always expansive and inclusive. This love cares, heals and does good. #GeneralAudience

Hope needs patience, the patience of knowing that we sow, but it is God who gives growth.

We are born with a seed of dissatisfaction in search of fulfillment. Our heart, even without knowing it, thirsts for the encounter with God and seeks it, many times taking the wrong road. When our dissatisfaction encounters Jesus, the life of grace begins.

The coronavirus is not the only disease to be fought, but rather, the pandemic has shed light on broader social ills. One of these is a distorted view of the person, a perspective that ignores the dignity and relational character of the person. #GeneralAudience

The disciples encountered the Risen Lord on the road to Emmaus. He also walks with us each day on the roads we travel, with unexpected twists and turns. Be comforted in knowing we never walk alone! Jesus accompanies and leads us. Like the disciples we say: “Stay with us Lord!”
