Very excited about Ethan Richman’s study that provides deep insight into competition between homeostatic needs! The work has it all — a new behavioral assay, brain-wide Neuropixels + optogenetics, and a new framework for understanding brain state dynamics. nature.com/articles/s4158…

Excited to see Ethan Richman's tour de force study of homeostatic drive competition come out! Brain-wide Neuropixels + exciting new approaches for modeling internal states. With Liqun Luo and @KarlDeisseroth nature.com/articles/s4158…

@bielleogy This was a preview I wrote a few years ago: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30998894/

Check out our new publication in collaboration with @NeoPascaLab. Congratulations @lori_dersh!

@UtzschneiderD The options suggested here aren't great. Increasing funding is optimistic, and not funding this year's candidates hardly solves the problem. Better would be to make applications vastly less work. A single page summary to cross some threshold of quality/interest, then a lottery

@DrBatmo @readcube @papersapp Extremely curious to know which studies Manchester United's former goalkeeper has co-authored
English

Question for anyone who uses @readcube @papersapp: How do you deal with particles in surnames? E.g. for Edwin van der Sar it formats it as "Sar, Edwin van der" rather than "van der Sar, Edwin". Help! #AcademicTwitter

@BeckyJordan321 An unnecessary compliment just makes me distrust the questioner. No need to be hostile though - it's easy enough to ask a question or disagree with something in a polite way. Suspect most disagreements are now more likely to happen at reception rather than in the seminar hall

This article by Eve Marder nicely reflects my own (and others I've spoken to) feelings about recent scientific discourse. I haven't heard an actual scientific debate or argument at a conference for a long time... elifesciences.org/articles/82928

@Noroftheair @CFCBurner11 @FootballMissess I think it falls under Law 12, fouls and misconduct, for "unsporting behaviour", which is a bookable offence. It's not explicitly stated that you can't say "leave it" etc, because you can if only your own teammates are nearby
English

@CFCBurner11 @FootballMissess Yeah but I just want to see the actual rule. I'm curious what the wording is and how they'd enforce that

An unexpected honour to round off an excellent conference! Thanks to the organisers and all of the participants for making it so memorable #LBBB2022

#LBBB2022 is almost coming to an end! Anita Leembruggen, Amy Shepherd, Ryan Hamnett & Gayathri Balasuriya delivered great talks on their work in the ENS! @GayathriKB @Ryxicon @anitaent17 @amylasenz tomorrow is our last day! 😱

Looking forward to a week in Germany at #LBBB2022 learning about all of the exciting science happening on our second brain :)

We’re excited to share our latest preprint “Anatomical and functional maturation of the mid-gestation human intestine”! We collaborated with @NeoPascaLab to assess the enteric nervous system and gastrointestinal motility develop during the 2nd trimester. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
English

@Leonardo_ASouza @biorxivpreprint We've always just done both at the same time/on the same day. Not sure that it makes too much difference to how reviewers or editors perceive it if it's already up. And if it's ready for Biorxiv then it's ready for submission, so no need to delay
English

Question: We are submitting the first research paper of our lab within the next weeks. Yay! We also want to deposit in @biorxivpreprint. What is the best strategy/practice:
1) Journal and biorxiv at the same time?
2) 1st biorxiv?
3) Wait to go for peer review, then biorxiv?

@LaurieParrot Did my undergrad dissertation on scrub jays, mostly based on Nicky Clayton's work. Sad times :(
English

@Ryxicon @MarkMacLeanCSOC @hadafatcat @cgajt @AndyRichter Yeah, that’s my take, too. Fascinating distribution chart though!!
English

@MarkMacLeanCSOC None of that is relevant here, where each letter can only be used once (as we already have the other 4). So you're just trying to guess which solution Wordle is more likely to pick. And 'slightly' doesn't matter when comparing chance vs systematically eliminating letters
