I have been trying to find something meaningful to say about the Id Software layoffs. My “Microsoft will probably be a good steward of the brand” statement isn’t aging well, and this is certainly going to dampen the mood of the founder reunion at QuakeCon next month. I’m saddened, but I can’t muster anger or outrage over it. I don’t have access to the books, but I suspect that Id Software was a marginal business from Microsoft’s perspective. I believe the reports that Minecraft revenues have been carrying several other studios. To continue being produced long term, games need to succeed, not just be beloved. Games are competing with every other option for spending your leisure time and money, and the competition is brutal. You can’t rule out the possibility that executives are idiots, but that shouldn’t be your default belief. I don’t think there is any obvious path that would have doubled the revenue from Id games. Could they have gotten more with a different pricing strategy? Could they have created more things for fans to buy? Could they have cost effectively marketed in a way that reached more players that would have loved and bought the games? Could they have changed the game designs and broadened the appeal to more players without alienating existing ones? Could they have produced the games at a lower cost, faster or cheaper? I really don’t know. The game isn’t over yet, and I hope the studio rallies through.

To the fans, community, and fellow game devs for sharing mine and others posts on different platforms - very much appreciated. It really means a lot and we were all so very thankful we could give you all many fun experiences over the years that I hope stick with you for a long time and inspire you to create and enjoy! It is a phenomenal feeling when the work you put in is enjoyed! Ya'll made it a great adventure! Secondly, DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations released today! This will be, unfortunately, my last shipped title with the studio and regardless of circumstance I truly hope everyone enjoys it! I will be posting my concept design work from it in the near future .... it was a fun project and a great end cap DOOM trilogy (and my time at the studio lol)! Stay tuned and follow for art and more! And now, previously posted yesterday on Linkedin: After over 12.5 years, one complete game trilogy and 1 day short of the 9th DOOM related project (and 12th project at this studio) I've worked on, myself and many others were informed our roles at id Software were terminated as part of larger organizational changes this morning. I had been very fortunate to have joined the studio at a point in time that felt like being there on the ground floor of something special for the studio. That feeling continued through today, just short of completing the story of trilogy. One of the truly special things about the studio was the sheer amount of skill amongst the team and the exciting and intense collaboration which is what made our games special and successful. With these changes many of my amazing colleagues are taking their institutional knowledge and skill sets into the wider industry. I am looking and open to what could be next in the immediate future; now it is time to put my money where my mouth is and stay focused on improving myself and what I can do to help those around me who were also impacted.
