Good Morning How Somatic markers can make or break you as a trader: The somatic marker hypothesis (SMH) is a theory in psychology and neuroscience that suggests that emotions play an important role in decision-making, even in complex and rational tasks. The theory was proposed by Antonio Damasio, a Portuguese neuroscientist, in the early 1990s. According to the SMH, somatic markers are bodily signals, such as changes in heart rate, sweating, or muscle tension, that are associated with particular situations or outcomes. These somatic markers are created by the brain's emotional system and are stored in memory. When we encounter a situation that we have previously associated with a negative somatic marker, we will experience a negative emotional response, such as fear or anxiety. This emotional response can then serve as a warning signal, helping us to avoid making decisions that could lead to negative outcomes. The SMH has been applied to a variety of decision-making tasks, including financial market trading. In a study by Damasio and colleagues (1996), patients with damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), a brain region that is involved in processing somatic markers, were found to be impaired in their ability to make decisions under risk. These patients were more likely to make risky decisions that led to losses, even when they had the necessary knowledge and information to make better decisions. The findings of this study suggest that somatic markers play an important role in financial market trading. By providing us with warning signals about potential losses, somatic markers can help us to avoid making poor decisions. However, it is important to note that somatic markers can also lead to biases in decision-making. For example, we may be more likely to avoid a risky investment because it makes us feel anxious, even if the investment is actually a good one. Overall, the somatic marker hypothesis provides a valuable insights into the role of emotions in decision-making. By understanding how somatic markers work, we can improve our ability to make rational and informed decisions, even in complex and risky situations. Here are some specific examples of how somatic markers can influence financial market trading: * A trader may experience a sinking feeling in their stomach when they are about to make a risky trade. This somatic marker may be a warning signal that the trade is not a good idea. * A trader may feel excited when they see a price rising. This somatic marker may be a signal, but as a trader we know market hype tends to lead to fake outs * A trader may feel anxious when they see a price falling. This somatic marker may be a signal for a bad trade, but that’s the exact emotion market engineers before rallying higher It is important to note that somatic markers are not always accurate. Sometimes, we may experience a somatic marker for a situation that does not actually lead to a negative outcome. However, somatic markers can be a valuable tool for helping us to make better decisions in trading. I encourage you to actively track these markers in your journal. You will evolve to recognise emotional feelings and actual signals. To then place yourself into a perfect trading flow. I do this routinely and every professional trader I talk to acknowledges and tracks their somatic markers.
