Today marks the beginning of Freedom Month in South Africa, a time to reflect on the country’s transition to democracy in 1994 and the meaning of freedom in our lives today. The words in this image are from a message by Nelson Mandela, read by his daughter Zindzi Mandela at a rally in Jabulani Stadium, Soweto, on 10 February 1985, in response to an offer of conditional freedom. Madiba's words, and the choices he made, remind us that freedom is not only personal, but collective. That our own liberation is bound up in the liberation of others.
