To add $USD1 to the Internet Computer, $ICP would basically need a way for USD1 to exist as a native token on ICP (ICRC standard) that’s always backed 1:1 by real USD1 on another chain (like Ethereum). The cleanest way is: create a “minter canister” on ICP (like a bridge + vault) that holds/controls USD1 on the origin chain, then mints an ICP version (e.g., ckUSD1 or icUSD1) on ICP when someone deposits USD1, and burns it on ICP when someone withdraws back to Ethereum/Solana/etc. This can be done either with the issuer’s cooperation (best—official backing/redemptions and clear reserve management) or via a third-party bridge model (works, but more trust/risk). On ICP specifically, you’d implement it as: an ICRC-1/ICRC-2 token canister + a minter/bridge canister + monitoring of deposits on the origin chain(s), then mint/burn accordingly. Why it benefits ICP: a credible dollar stablecoin is the “fuel” for DeFi and payments—USD1 on ICP would likely increase liquidity/TVL, make it easier for people to trade without volatility, enable lending/borrowing, perps, and stable savings, improve merchant/payroll use cases, and make it easier for new users to onboard because they can bring “digital dollars” directly into ICP apps. Stablecoins also tend to increase overall network activity (more swaps, more transactions, more apps), which can strengthen ICP’s ecosystem and attract builders, users, and capital.
