Over the last 15 years or so, I have seen many people become very rich through business, some of them my close friends. Most rely on government and NGO contracts or importing goods for resale locally. I have hardly seen anyone get rich through value addition or production. They make money locally and source materials externally, mostly from South Africa, China, and Dubai. Most also spend abroad when they want to use the money made locally. What does this mean? These businesses are not export-oriented and do not generate foreign exchange. Instead, they are import-intensive and deplete forex, operating in what economists term a consumption-driven, import-led model rather than a production-led, export-driven one. Malawi exports roughly 900 million to 1 billion dollars every year, while imports range between 3 and 3.6 billion dollars, creating a persistent trade deficit of about 2 to 2.4 billion dollars per year. Last year alone, the deficit was around 2.4 billion dollars. In simple terms, Malawi earns only about 20 to 30 cents for every dollar it spends on imports. Ridiculous! Unfortunately, many of the wealthiest people today are in non-productive, rent-seeking sectors such as tenderpreneurship and import supply chains. Meanwhile, those who actually bring in forex are farmers and small traders. I know a woman who goes to South Africa, sells produce from Malawi worth about 30,000 rand, and returns with goods to sell locally. That often ignored network exporting tobacco, tea, sugar, soybeans, groundnuts, fish, and fresh produce to markets like South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania, the EU, and India is what actually adds value. I suspect that the rise in tenderpreneurship and supply businesses is why there is a forex crisis and why, although you are seeing so many big cars and more people get rich, the country’s economy has worsened and more people are still living in abject poverty. If Malawi is to fix its economy, it must shift from an import-dependent model to a production- and export-led path by investing in agriculture, agro-processing, manufacturing, and small-scale value addition. Otherwise, we will remain trapped in trade deficits, forex crises, and superficial wealth that does not translate into real development!
