World No Tobacco Day 2025 : Bright Products. Dark Intentions. Unmasking the Appeal.
For World No Tobacco Day on May 31st, the @WHO highlights the tobacco industry's deceptive practices, which use attractive packaging and marketing strategies to target new and young users. Beneath the bright allure of these products lies a dangerous reality of addiction, disease, and environmental destruction.
The WHO FCTC provides critical tools for addressing these issues through various articles that guide governments in protecting public health:
🚭Article 8: Protection from exposure to tobacco smoke – a key measure for creating smoke-free environments.
💰 Article 6: Price and tax measures to reduce tobacco consumption.
⚠️Article 11: Packaging and labeling of tobacco products – a powerful tool for increasing public awareness of tobacco's dangers.
📣Article 13: Tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship – crucial in regulating the tobacco industry's marketing strategies.
🍬Articles 9 and 10: Regulation of the contents and disclosures of tobacco products, ensuring transparency in what is being consumed.
✋🏽Article 14: Demand reduction measures concerning tobacco dependence and cessation – supporting individuals in quitting tobacco use.
These articles collectively provide a framework for reducing tobacco consumption and mitigating the industry's harmful influence.

Africa’s 15–24 age group is growing — and Big Tobacco sees profit.
Vape shops are popping up near campuses, not in areas where people smoke the most.
This isn’t random. It’s calculated youth targeting.

The Control of Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Bill is back in parliament as pressure mounts for the government to enact it. Global Adult Tobacco Survey SA Report shows that E-cigarette use among youth is on the rise, raising concerns about nicotine addiction and long-term health implications. Prof. Lekan Ayo-Yusuf says the bill is not the ban on the sale of tobacco but regulating its use to protect the youth.
