The Slow Wheels of Justice! I recently filed a case at the High Court. The staff at the Process Unit calmly informed me it could take up to two weeks for the Chief Judge (CJ) to assign the matter to a specific court, and that I should follow up after then. Hoping for consolation, I called a friend to vent. He told me that the last case he filed at the high court took one full month just to be assigned. And that’s only the beginning. Once assigned, the defendant must be served with the writ. They then have 21 days to file their Statement of Defence (or counterclaim). After that, the claimant still has 14 days to file a Reply. By my calculation, we’re easily looking at well over one month before the case even comes up for the first time, and that’s assuming zero hitches. What kind of justice moves at a tortoise’s pace? How do we expect the public to maintain confidence in the judiciary when justice is delayed like this? "Justice delayed is justice denied" is not just a saying, it’s the daily reality for many citizens who turn to the courts for resolution. Later on, we will wonder why citizens take even civil cases to the police or EFCC. Truth is, we need faster case assignment systems, digital tracking, more judges, and stricter timelines if the system is to remain credible.

Are there mental health supports for human rights lawyers? Some of us hear stories of egregious human rights abuses and they shake us to the bones.

An Islamic scholar said something yesterday about Sheikh Pantami that really resonated with me He said, “If Sheikh Pantami does not win the primaries or the general election, it simply means one thing: the people are not good enough to deserve him.”
Sarki.@Waspapping_

Personally, if I were Isa Ali Pantami, I’d resign from politics and return to teaching the words of Allah. He’s already successful and wealthy. The insults and disrespect in politics aren’t worth whatever he’s chasing there. Politics is dirty game and he won’t be spared either.

For young litigation lawyers, let me share a practice tip with us. Whenever you successfully foreclose the prosecution in a case and the only witness in the case TESTIFIED HALFWAY AND DID NOT RETURN FOR CROSS-EXAMINATION, your best option is not No Case Submission (NCS). The best option is to rest your case on the case of the prosecution. On the effect of the evidence of a witness who did not return for cross-examination, read the cases of Al-mustapha v. State and Shofolahan v. State. See Part 1383 of the @NWLRonline.
