The Stratospheric Ballooning Association (SBA) has been monitoring recent events involving high-altitude balloons over United States airspace. Hundreds, if not thousands, of high-altitude balloons are flown safely every day for the purpose of meteorological, scientific, and educational purposes. These types of balloons provide atmospheric data that is critical for weather predictions and atmospheric science studies. They also are used to fly a wide variety of other science and technology payloads into the stratosphere. High-altitude balloons provide an affordable and inspiring tool for students to learn and become excited about STEM activities by flying student-built payloads into the near-space environment.
We remind all SBA members and those actively doing safe, high-altitude ballooning to please exercise caution, always employing best practices, including working closely with your local FAA office.
