The two-day workshop to address 'Challenge of Elephant-train Collisions' arrived at key decisions furthering the consistent efforts to save the gentle giants. The @moefcc and @RailMinIndia have been working together towards capacity building of railways and state forest officials, and retrofitting rail infrastructure for smooth movement of elephants. We continue to extend impetus to mitigating human-elephant conflicts, and aligning key infrastructure that doesn't obstruct free passage of our valued lifestyle. 🔗 pib.gov.in/PressReleasePa…

In the first technical session, Dr. S. P. Goyal, Former Scientist G & Senior Professor at the Wildlife Institute of India, highlighted the growing threats posed by railway tracks to wildlife and forest ecosystems. He emphasized mitigation measures to reduce wildlife collisions and discussed how railway operations disturb forest environments beyond direct wildlife mortality. He also underscored the role of emerging technologies and monitoring systems for early detection and improved protection along vulnerable railway corridors. @wii_india @moefcc @RailMinistry_in @ntca_india @IBCA_official @rameshpandeyifs @GobindsagarBha1 @paragnigam09 @wildwithwolves @AnukulNath4

A remarkable discovery in northern #SaudiArabia has revealed seven naturally mummified cheetahs and 54 skeletal remains preserved in desert caves, some dating back over 4,000 years. Using radiocarbon dating, CT scans, and full genomic sequencing, researchers uncovered a surprising story about the region’s lost cheetahs. 🔬 Key findings 1. Ancient cheetahs in Arabia belonged to two subspecies – the #WestAfricanCheetah (Acinonyx jubatus hecki) and #AsiaticCheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) 2. Older remains cluster genetically with the West African cheetah 3. The youngest mummy aligns with the critically endangered Asiatic cheetah 4. Caves acted as natural time capsules, preserving soft tissue and DNA in an arid climate 🌍 Why it matters Cheetahs have vanished from 91% of their historic range, including Saudi Arabia. These discoveries provide the first genomic evidence to guide future rewilding efforts, helping conservationists identify the most appropriate subspecies to restore to #ArabianLandscapes. 🦌 With prey species already recovering and protected areas expanding, this research bridges ancient biodiversity and modern conservation, showing how the past can directly inform the future of wildlife recovery. #BigCats #IBCAforCheetah More on nature.com/articles/s4324…
