Now officially recognized as the greatest WHL player of all time after being named the highest-ranked WHL player on the CHL’s Top 50 Players of the Last 50 Years list, Joe Sakic’s legacy continues to stand above the rest.
To honour the milestone, we dug through the archives to find some classic photos from Sakic’s days with the Swift Current Broncos. 📸
A native of Burnaby, BC, Sakic played three seasons with the Broncos from 1985-88, recording 293 points in 139 WHL games. After appearing in three games with Lethbridge in 1985-86, Sakic broke through with Swift Current in 1986-87 with a 133-point rookie season, before following it up with a historic 160-point campaign in 1987-88 that earned him CHL Player of the Year honours.
Selected 15th overall by the Quebec Nordiques in 1987, Sakic went on to spend 20 NHL seasons with the Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche franchise, winning two Stanley Cups, a Hart Trophy, Olympic gold with Canada men's national ice hockey team, and earning his place among hockey’s all-time greats.
