Ledyard was dead. Four straight years of two and eight. Three coaches in four years. A football town with no football. Then Mike Serricchio walked in. Twenty-seven years old. No head coach experience. COVID season. He took the job anyway. Five years later Ledyard is a team nobody wants on their schedule. This week on The Gridiron Warrior Podcast, Mike walks me through how he did it. Not with more. Not with louder. Not with some fresh Instagram drill he saw last week. He did it by picking an identity and refusing to drift. His rule: "More is not better. Better is better." That one line explains why Ledyard lines up in the single wing and runs power sweep wedge fifty-five times in a row. Why they train hard but not stupid. Why a small school in Connecticut is beating Double L programs that look like D1 rosters when they step off the bus. And his promise to every opponent never changes. "I guarantee you when we finish the game, they will not wanna play us again." That is a physical identity. It gets built in the weight room. It gets built in the contact prep. It gets built in the competition days where kids learn how to knuckle up before the season even starts. Mike runs Gridiron Warrior at Ledyard. Here is what he told me on the episode. "All the mental load of me programming got taken out. I knew it was elite because you had done it. It was a no brainer." "The contact prep, the crawling, the rolling, the competition stuff has had an absolutely tangible impact. Upper body injuries are basically nothing for us. Our kids don't really pull muscles at all." If you are a high school coach wearing ten hats and you are still writing your own program at midnight, you are spending time in the wrong place. Mike stopped trying to be a gym rat and started outsourcing the parts of his job that someone else had already figured out. His kids got stronger. His kids got healthier. His kids got a head coach who showed up fresh. That is the whole pitch. We also get into why he tells every kid at Ledyard to wrestle. Why he tells his linemen to play lacrosse.
