🌴 A new episode of Growing Palmetto airs next week! Join Jada Walker, host of Growing Palmetto, as we highlight the impact of the 4-H Youth Development program across South Carolina.

Students received a copy of the book and a Dr. Suess themed hat to take home, reinforcing the joy of reading beyond the classroom. 📚

During Read Across America Week, the Midlands region visited Edisto Elementary School to read “A Chair for My Mother” to students, promoting the importance of reading and literacy.

The Low Country region hosted a Pond Management Workshop for pond owners managing recreational ponds or exploring commercial aquaculture. Attendees received instruction on pond construction & maintenance, water quality assessment, aquatic weed & algae identification.💧

🇬🇲 Our scholars continued their journey in The Gambia with a visit to the Kachikally Sacred Crocodile Pool and Museum, where culture and history came to life. Students explored the museum, deepened their understanding of Gambian heritage and interacted with the sacred crocodiles.

The Extension Emerging Leadership Initiative cohort recently gathered in Columbia for an impactful learning experience! 👏 Valuable insights were gained from various speakers and cohort members gave excellent presentations about their time spent shadowing outstanding leaders. 💚

The UTG School of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences Welcomed Dr. Lamin E. Drammeh & 13 students from @SCSTATE1896. The visit featured a campus tour, an engaging lecture by Dr. Drammeh, and a drone donation to support learning and research at the UTG. #Collaboration

Scholars heard from Dr. Lamin Dibba, research director for NARI, who delivered a presentation outlining the institute’s strategic initiatives to advance ag research and development across the country, providing insight into how research is shaping the future of ag in The Gambia.

Day four in The Gambia began with a visit to the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI). 🇬🇲

The visit highlighted the growing collaboration between SC State PSA and the University of The Gambia and a shared commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture through education, research and technology. 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽

On behalf of SC State PSA, the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences was also presented with a drone to support agricultural innovation. Students will receive training and become drone certified, expanding their skills in precision agriculture. 👏🏽

Day 3 in The Gambia brought our scholars to the University of The Gambia’s School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. 🇬🇲

Our scholars had the opportunity to meet the women farmers, learn more about their operations and hear their heartfelt gratitude for the support. It was inspiring to see the garden thriving with abundant water and crops that help sustain their work and community. 🫱🏽‍🫲🏾

A solar-powered well and pump system delivers water to 49 new and renovated concrete reservoirs throughout the fields, with tanks holding up to 30,000 liters.

Our second stop on day two took us to Illiassa, where we visited the women farmers. 🇬🇲 Through a project led by SC State PSA in 2024, the garden now has an abundant and reliable water supply for approximately 400 women farmers.
